What would other teams do if they google and find alva's site? That is a private site (intended to be).

How did Shiber find the chat room?

'We will not attempt to enter or view any private forums.' How strictly do we want to interpret that? Did Togas mean these private forums? I think he did, knowing him and how he writes. He usually says exactly what he means.

At any rate, there is little chance that Lego will get their turn today. RP is next, and Togas is not starting until 9pm. I will ask him for clarification on the charter when he is on.

Unless we can get MarkG to let us attach images, there is no way to guarantee our security, or any teams for that matter. Anything can be hacked or broken into eventually, or simply searched for on a search engine.

I strongly suggest we push the Moderators to allow us to post attachments. This could become a really BIG problem.

I agree that we should not spy on what's intended to be secure communications within a team. From an ethical perspective, there is no real difference between that and spying on the private forums.

me too ... although I am very much in favour of slapping the RP team with a big trout for being the slowest team in the history of universe.

we finished our turn 3+hours ago and only 2 teams have completed their turn since then.

FP. There was a thread where it was discussed, and agreed to by many, that each team could have up to a day with the save for turn 1.

It will be that way for the most part, aside from times when we arrange for an accelerated session. The accelerated session kind of just happened today. We were pushed along by the impetus of many eager people. Thankfully, a few of you were around today to lend a hand. I think we are off to a great start.

btw, we may get to turn 2 tonight. The sav is with Lego. They are last. From them it goes back to us.

I feel I have a very good idea of the consensus for turn 2. Plop settler and begin clearing forest with furs.

I would set research to Wheel and max the slider.

Any problems with this?

nye, I can't even go there (great effort, though).

Let's stick with the short-term...

1) Citizen: (I think) You propose on the grassland / river tile. So, we've only got 1 shield coming in...

2) Worker: Clearing the forest / furs. Finished in 2700BC... what's the shield payoff, and for what?

3) Research: At what % are you getting a 27 turn completion?

Sorry for being obtuse, but this is what will make us or break us.

Sorry about the confusion Re: the first move: I somehow mixed West and East... it looks great where youa re now.

As to spying: I wouldn't spy on private communications, however we should make it very difficult for people to spy on us. So some remarks on alva's site:
- So far, we can't be googled, the site has no incoming link and as long as no-one submits the precise link to google, it won't be found.
- In the future, it is not very safe, as it uses default pages. When you enter the url for the directory, the Gathering Storm pages start (index.html ?). If we want protection against google, we should make an extra layer here: have an index.html, with no GS information (or fake one, if our webmeister kan be bothered), and have a separate page with all secret information, which is not linked from any page on the net. This second page will stay isolated, meaning that it can contain all info you want, it will never be found by google.
- other security features: chats should be either led by irc-knowable people, or rather on PMs here.

I still think some password protection is due. If it's possible, put an HTTP authentication based password (with .htpasswd), or at least zip the pictures with Winzip 8.0 or above and put a very long password on it.
Regarding IRC, I'm very experienced with IRC. If noone objects I'll go and set up a channel for us on Apolyton's IRC channel. I can lock it with a password (which we will change periodically), work some spellz to protect the channel and set it so it automatically gives op status to team members that enter the room (so they can kick out spies if such still manage to enter the room).

Umm... kinda complicated really. You'll also need to learn how to encrypt the password with UNIX hashes. And besides, I strongly doubt that your webspace provider even allows users to use .htpasswd locks so it's not really worth the bother.
I could point you to a good book or two though if you're interested in learning.

Let's just use password-protected zip files for now. I know the password can be broken with brute-force (using a program that systematically attempts to guess the password and can guess thousands of passwords per second in zip's case), but if we choose a long password (15 characters or more) with numbers and symbols it would take anyone trying to break the password with a PC several lifetimes to crack it.
