Ah but I have stated why I think the games we are discussing should be classed as very similar in gameplay style. Your argument is mere unsubstantiated sophistry.

The Sims and SimCity are AS similar in gameplay as Starcraft and Civ2. The only thing they have in common is openendedness.

The Sims online is surprisingly good...

I got it to see how bad it was but it's pretty addictive.

I'm essentially a venture capitalist in the game now. I've got tons of money so I loan other people money to go start up businesses.

I love openended games- Morrowind, Grand Theft Auto 3, Simcity, etc. Heck, I guess fundamently CIV is openended in the sense that you simply need to survive as an empire, and where the ends justify the means.

Okay, the difference is The Sims is life, or what passes for life in the game. SimCity is larger than life.

You do what the Sims do in The Sims everyday, except faster, more efficient, more detailed, and in more sophisticated ways. I mean, I don't take five minutes to pee.

And there's an 'i' in alumin*i*um!

Back on topic before this degrades further:

So, we're all agreed that Sim games are generally (though not always) for non-serious gamers right? The sort of game your parents (who have just dragged themselves into the computer age) play is The Sims.

But since that is the most notable feature of both games you have to class them as similar. This is why I cannot understand people drawing a line between The Sims and Sim City.

The thing is... in SimCity you're controlling an aggregate open-endedness... while in The Sims your micromanaging... those things, while looking similar are quite different. It's why I like SimTower, SimCity, and not The Sims... SimAnt actually had a goal...

quote:
To move the debate on though; I would say generally it is non-serious gamers who like the sim games. Most serious gamers prefer more demanding games with goals, but sim games appeal to more occasional gamers. The widespread success of the sims is indicative of this.

Discuss.

Can't argue there... though I have seen some pretty heavy role-players get lost in the Sims and found it funny when two people I knew played it on their computers, going back and forth, each dating each other both IRL and on-screen... just a little disturbing...

The part about parents being drug in and playing The Sims being non-serious gamers, most likely... maybe somebody should conduct a poll...

the sims was slow, so that was agitating, and besides there wasn't a sense of accomplishment..which seems to be something i need in a game

True, but I've found I'm generally an exception to the rule...

Could we define "Serious" and "non-serious" gamers by genre, type, and goals (or lack of goals) available? I'm in need of clarification.

I'd say:

Serious gamers often plays games in the same genre (Which is everybody else I know)
Non-serious gamers plays many different types of genres (Which is me)

Multiple genres? That's kind of crummy...

I'm a RPGer (Squaresoft buyer).

Mega Man fan.

Street Fighter.

Strategy (Civ genre, not StarCraft genre)

Racer (SpyHunter and Mario Kart varieties.)

Pilot (Star Fox, want Jedi Starfighter)

Simer (SimCity style, not "The Sims" style)

etc. etc. etc.

Under those terms, I'm a non-serious gamer...
