Yes, I can understand being against it for RP reasons while thinking it works very well, however, I'm for it for both for RP reasons and because I think it's a good setting.

Beloved Jedinicans. I come to you to ask your opinion about our military spending. How big should it be? Is it big enough as it is? We currently support a gatling squad, two trance scout skirmishers, and a trance plasma sentinels. Should we build a trance plasme sentinels in each base, only in certain bases, or should we upgrade existing police infantries to police plasma sentinels? Should we build a few empath rovers? Or something else? Opinions are appreciated.

Sit on the porch, firing artillery potshots at the Hive coast?

Build a naval weapons R&D facility with testing range, making sure most of the rounds land in Hive territory (preferably a base)?

I was talking about the RP enjoyment factor of lobbing explosives and such at Yang's territory, not necessarily expecting it to do much. Also, while the computer doesn't terraform nearly as much as a good player, there is quite a bit of (say) farmland and solars around The Leader's Horde; I think it's all within 2 squares of an ocean square. Perhaps shelling all those enhancements wouldn't be an efficient use of our ships (particularly if Yang hits them with needles), but it'd be fun

Well I had one game where the Consciousness obtained 8-res armour while I only had tachyon guns. On that occasion I found it useful to have a few artillery pieces to weaken those garrisons protected by perimeter defences and aerospace complexes.
But that was indeed about the only time I ever actually used artillery. And since there is no way in plain SMAC to gain strong armour relatively fast, we can just let our future noodles and choppers do all the tough and dirty jobs.

Really?? I never noticed a thing. And I recall very lively being bombarded often by the AI in plain SMAC or fighting some artillery duels against other artillery or ships.

You can do Arty duels, or destroy enhancements, but that's about it. Pretty pointless. It just doesn't work like it's supposed to. For human players at any rate.

Interesting thing about Sea bases is how they should be regarded, if placed between us and an enemy: as an extension of defense bases policy, or simply centres of population growth.

We stole SSF from Yang last session, iirc, and thus have missile capability... or do you mean prototype it?

As for how sea bases should be regarded:

It's been mentioned that sea bases aren't nearly as productive mineral-wise as land bases. Perhaps the sea base emphasis should be on defense then, rather than resources. Forward bases for naval and amphibious operations, or at worst an early warning system against invasion of our own continent. Or would it be better to emphasize nutrient production and thus large populations (for votes, at least)?

Ok things have changed. I asked for volunteers ( bases) to include proto-type AAA units and/or needlejets
and interceptors into the build Q. I would like your region to volunteer something.

I have volunteered to build two AAA units. To build decent air units, I would first have to build an expensive aerospace complex. Therefore I would suggest limiting the bases producing those and not ask any region to build some air units.

FYI, after the hab complex in Terminal Dogma is finished, I plan to build an aerospace complex in that base. Then I can build decent air units as well. Also, in a yet undetermined time, I'd like to build a naval yard in Sheathed Sword. Together with the Command Center in Concordia, I can then provide the military with each type of unit desired. Valhalla and Pandemonium have a small mineral production, so for now I don't plan to gear those bases up to possible military production.
