You go back in time to the year 1400 with a rather large aircraft carrier, which has a full compliment of planes(think something on the scale of the USS Lincoln-largest ship in the U.S. fleet) with 500 fully decked out marines on board. You have 2 heavy duty artilery pieces and enough ammo/fuel/food/spare parts/supplies to run for one year before you need any new items......
How do you conquer the world?

Go to the Med. Take a helicopter into Rome and land on St Peters Square. Delcare yourself the Archangel Michael, and relieve the Pope of his throne.
Now take his place, and demand fealty from all nations. If they don't obey, drop one inflammatory bomb on their major city. They will then. Keep it up till you rule Europe, then do the same to the Islamic world whilat getting some cronies to do whatever the Spaniards did in the Americas. I suppose you could now take on the nations in the Asian sub-continent and China. And presto World conquered.
If you assume that you'd be able to implement modern techniques for oil refinery and the like in the conquered bits, it might be even easier.

I think this would work a lot better if I started in Asia. After all, they had more people, while Europe's technological edge had barely begun.
On the other hand, this shouldn't be TOO hard. Why not try a much tougher scenario? Forget the carrier, you have just 500 marines with enough ammo to conquer a large city easily (but no more). (Let's say, a city the size of Baghdad, Constantinople, Venice, or Hangzhou.) Your marines are also quite knowledgeable about all forms of land, sea, and air weaponry. How would you conquer the world?

You have several advantages:
1. You know what are going to happen in the future.
2. You know which people are good and which are bad.
3. You know the technologies, or at least in which way your alchemists(scientists) have to research.
4. You have unrivaled firepower.
5. You have unrivaled communication capability.
Your biggest advantage is not your firepower, but your knowledge. For example:
- You can pick any country that meets your needs.
- You can use your knowledge to impress its ruler, building up support in that country, and ultimately usurp the power.
- You can win any battle with your existing military knowledge(training, leadership, logistics, weaponries) and a nice sets of radios.
- You know how the country should be run, which political structure and economic policies it needs.
- Your firepower should only be applied to resolve emergency situations.

I'd take Japan because Japan is cool. Land there, win a war for them, and make friends with those in command. The people will like me cause I won the war. Eventually, the people more important than me will meet with tragic accidents. Then I'd build an airstrip, unload the planes to the island. (This makes Japanese mainland invincible for the next 350 years.) Use the carrier to take people, supplies, and whatnot across the Pacific. Colonize California and Western North America. Build up trade, shipping resources quickly across the Pacific with the carrier, and make a lot of money. Try to convert the little islands in the Pacific to my cause. Make examples of ones that don't. Build airstrips on the islands so that I can project my power farther. Be a Pacific Phoenicia, except a bit more evil and with advanced technology, to summarize.

Japan is a bad choice because this island lacks many necessary resources. Also, you need to enlist Asians in your group.

A country should have the following characteristics:
- Has a centralized bureaucracy, meaning no pesky feudal lords to deal with. It also means once you control the central government, your command would be carried out as it is.
- Is in direct competition with another country, war usually opens up opportunities for outsiders to intervene.
- Must have access to both good human and material resources. Abundance of alchemists(scientists), craftsmen(engineers), merchants, and loyal peasants is seen as good human resources. Abundance of iron, horses, silver, and gold mines is seen as good material resources.
- Its population must have a certain zeal to spread its culture.
- Its culture may cover large territories and include many separate states.

I would not do it either, especially if I can only bring 500 marines along with me. Who's going to save my ass if I get an appendix infection?
