Like someone else said, PTW seems to make it go a lot faster. I am playing a map with probably 400 cities, but no slow down in the modern age. Compares very favorably to standard Civ3.
Also, take care of your computer, I disable everything while playing, helps out.
edit: now I realize that Willem says it moves faster in some areas slower in ohters. For me, the turns move faster, but it takes more time to exit the game, i stare at windows for a minute or so before being able to do anything. but the turns themselves seem improved for me.

I get annoyed sometimes when I'm waiting for my queue list to finish scrolling down. And the Military Advisor screen is certainly much slower than it was. But at least I don't have to watch every single unit in a stack make an individual move. That's certainly a time saver! |
Right.
The military advisor is quite annoying to use now. very frustrating. good thing I have that spy, right? even though it takes a minute to see what type of units he has. very frustrating.

According to the chat, they're working on fixing that for the next patch. |

Awckie:
check out the threads in the ptw forum.
I would highly recommend PTW for SP users. New civs, new units, new buildings, wonders, worker commands. AI is improved, esp. barbarian AI. A more complete, fun game, IMHO. If you can drop the 30 or whatever it is now, I would recommend it, esp. for SP.
My favorite new thing at the moment is how you can set cities to feed other cities units. no need to move them all individually, they will arrive on their own at the front.

You forgot to mention true stack movement!
