have you tried using the ptw.ini file in the CIV3PTW folder?
Edit:You beat me to it

And also, just for the record,
There is no ptw.ini or civ3.ini until you run the game for the first time. You must install the game, then run the game, then quit the game then add the keepres line to the ini file, then you can run the game and keep your resolution.
Hope this helps

cheetahfox, thank you for asking this. You have dramatically improved the quality of my life. I have always been slightly annoyed by the fact that despite the fact that I have a very nice video card and a big monitor, Civ3/PTW insists on giving me vision-impaired resolution although my display resolution is set to 1152x854 but have been too lazy to dig around and find out how to change it since it's not in the GUI. Now I can see more than 3 cities at a time! Thank you and thanks to Cartouche for providing the filename.

Well I feel stupid, I was looking for something like civ3.ini and I totaly missed ptw.ini... As for what type of monitor I have, it's a Hitachi 813(21inch .14Vert/.22horiz dotpitch) running at 1600x1200@85Hz... I would recommend a 21inch hitachi monitor to anyone who wants a good monitor. In fact I belive that if your going to spend extra on any computer part it should be the monitor. I have had this one for 3 years now and it still looks great. But the computer that I first used with this monitor is long gone(as I remember it was a PII-450)... I the main reason I want to run the game at my desktop resolution is so I can task switch in and out of the game and still use my computer...

well, my 19inch is allready a couple off years old....
It's was one of the first 19inc monitors, that was affordable
And yes, having a good monitor is important, much more so then the processor,etc.......
@you can't really , but there is a work-around.
I often use it when doing alot of pbem, setting the ini file at a lower resolution then your desktop(don't forget the keepres=1),
will give somekind of windowed-mode. It's not perfect, but it can be handy.
On the other hand, the windows key works fine too.
ps: civ is on the best games for doing this.... playing the game,
while chatting, brouwsing, sending e-mails, resising a print-screen.....all at once, without any problem
