	Al Gore to announce he will NOT run in 2004! Remove this text

From the NY Times:

quote: Al Gore has decided against running for president in 2004, ending a month-long flirtation with another candidacy, according to associates of Mr. Gore. Mr. Gore will announce his decision in an interview on 60 Minutes tonight, according to those sources. The decision marks the end of a chapter in the political life of Mr. Gore while immediately recasting the entire Democratic field.

So who is now the front runner for 2004? John Kerry?

Youch! Gore was actually probably the dems best chance...

Well we will see what happens. Kerry is probably the best candidate, but I suspect if the dems think bush is unchallengeable, they may run a woman (Hillary?) or some other "no actual chance of winning" symbolic candidate (like Dukakis or Mondale)...

I think Kerry would be it, or maybe Edwards?

I doubt it will be Lieberman: too centrist, too much like BUsh. Dems need to get back to their base instead of trying to widen it. If the Dems get their base to the voting booth, they will win the popular vote like in 2000 and this time they would also have the Electoral congress votes as well.

BUt two huge unknows: The state of the economy and the outcome of the Iraq war will both decide 2004.

Even if the Dems get their base, I have a feeling that the Republicans, if they get their base out, will win.

They need someone charismatic, but they have no one. Clinton had the most charisma in the Party, but he can't run anymore.

The Republican base is smaller than the democratic base nationally: ie, the Dems. victory in the popular vote in 2000. The way to win modern elections is to get your base to vote, and depress the turnout of the other side's base.

Too many things are on the table today to get a clear pic of 2004. If unemployment is still over 5.7% by 2004, things may be difficult for Bush. We still have to await the outcome and consequences of the Iraq war, and the possible upcoming crisis with DPRK.

Hillary won't run for 2004. 2006 though. Bush will be reelected if he topples Saddam, if he can't adios.

That's incorrect. As the DLC has pointed out recently there are far more self declared conservatives then there are self declared liberals. The Democrats win only by appealing to moderates, as Clinton did in '92 and '96. The great majority of voters in elections are moderates and if the Dems let the GOP have them, Bush wins in 2004.

Aw. That sucks. He actually might have won, too; especially if Bush wasn't trotting out plans to invade everywhere except Kansas. Gore did win the popular vote in 2000, and with all the minorities whose vote didn't count in Florida... (can't think of a good example. Will later.) Gore would've won the electoral vote too, although it is a silly system that needs to be thrown in the wastebasket.

SNL would have had him on anyway...he's comic gold.

Howard Dean is the only announced Dem candidate so far. Gephardt's aides say he is "very likely" to run, too.

Gore probably did the right thing. As much as I like him, I don't think he should go through a campaign again this soon.

John Kerry just doesn't seem like the type of guy who will be president of the US. I don't know if it is a lack of recognition, or just the way he is, but if thats the best the Dems can come up with, i think that we will see Bush for four more years.

As I've said before, that's total BS. As Shi just said, The Dems got more popular vote because Gore won more of the independant vote.

The Republican base is bigger than the Democrat base, and even Democratic organizations admit it. Democrats have to take the indeps to win.

Didn't Hillary promise the voters of New York that she would not seek any other office in O4? Then again I remember Bill saying to Arkansas that he wasnt going to run either when he was elected govenor. But we all know how that turned out.


I think maybe Gore is wanting to put some more time between him and the Clinton era and maybe his defeat to Bush. He must not think that Bush is especially an easy target or he would be stepping over people to throw his hat in the ring. Anyway, I hope Nader runs again.

Source? Since the AR governor's term is two years, he wouldn't have had to quit mid-term to be president. So I don't see why he would have made such a promise.

In order to become President, Bill Clinton resigned from the office of governor and his Lt. Gov.(and friend) Jim Guy Tucker became govenor. Tuckher was later to be convicted to fraud and forced to resign in the fallout of whitewater. As far as sources go it was a campaign promise he made. The only thing I can find is that he resigned after saying he would complete his term.
