when I'm playing GTA3 my roomates are confused when I say "this is for Mathilda" and "this is the pin trick" when I lob grenades at policemen and swat team members.

About 15 houses in my neighborhood have been robbed by the same guy in the past 2 months. What's puzzling is that the police know what he looks like and they know that he doesn't live in our neighborhood, yet we're the only neighborhood in the area that's had any robberies. The police know who he is to some degree because he broke into an old guy's house while the guy was inside. He ran out once he realized there was someone inside. My house isn't gonna be robbed because he seems to freak out and run away before stealing anything a lot (which suggests to me that he is afraid of confrontations) and my mom always has talk radio on in the kitchen. Also my mom stays home for most of the day.

This is pretty much my only experience with crime. One of my friends was unsuccessfully mugged by a rather stupid guy in New York, and that's about it.

My apt building got at least one murder every year... one of them was even a triple homicide... thats some nut stuff. Three people got shot two floors down from me...

Moving requires money... and anyway, crime isnt even that bad. No one's going to pull a gun on you with the intent of killing you unless you did something real bad to them. So as long as you don't do nothing crazy you not going to get killed. And me, being a young male, I probably won't get mugged or nothing though my mom did get mugged and pistol whipped that one time.

Well it don't seem like that much crime to me... everybody gets mugged at least once in their life. and murders happen all the time. I don't live in a particularily high crime area of philly either. so relatively, nah i dont got too much crime. there's worse. every place got some crime

pretty uncomfortable, murders. I had a murder in the appartment building next to mine. A man killed his own mother. I had a bad feeling all day. I never knew they even existed, but still the police and all of the noise around made it quite an unpleasant experiece. To think that you may have incidentally met this guy...

In my case, I actually played organ for their funeral, since I was the organist at the local church at the time. I didn't know the person until I saw him in the open coffin.

I didn't run with him. Don't remember his name, cuz he was caught early, only killed two people. He was in the US Army, serving in Germany, came over to visit a mutual friend. Real quiet and creepy. I wasn't surprised when I heard about it. Anyway, he killed a guy in the army to see if he could actually kill someone. Then he killed a German prostitute because he could kill someone. Then he got caught. West Germany still existed at the time, so you can figure out when this happened.

Apparently he confesssed to my "friend," but he didn't believe him. Then the Army yanked him to Europe to testify at trial. They weren't too happy with him.

I've told you guys about the nurse who worked in our clinic who was shot to death by her boyfriend in our parking lot after work one night. Even more sad about her situation was that she had a brother who had been shot dead by a friend years before. Her parents were left with no children surviving.

We tended to have lower crime rates in the past, at least up until the 1980's then 20 years of urban neglect came back to bite.

I got mugged and got in a fight on the same night (last thursday night).

My fault for going out at 3am to get groceries and cigarettes. I ended up giving the git with a knife my phone and my wallet. Lucky he didn't look too hard in my bag, since I had a £400 camera hidden away!

After that, I made my way home via the park, thinking it be safe.....but oh no...

Some fuckhead asks "R U gay?" in the typical under-18, without hope fashion.

So I look him in the eye and say "Yes... Yes I am".

So him and his (so far invisible) friend jump out at me at start throwing punches at my back and groin.

By some miracle they miss my bollocks and I fight back until somebody else comes along and they scarper.

Ended up walking home with said person, very grateful for that.

Still have chipped tooth and black eye, its a laugh really

There appear to be quite a number of people here who have had close contact with violence, even in its most extreme form. I find it odd that most of the stories here involve violence on a primarily interpersonal level, not a professional criminal level. Thirty years ago 80% of murders were interpersonal, i.e., arising out of arguements and not related to other criminal activity. More recent statistics by the FBI indicate that now 60% of murders stem from some other criminal activity, yet in my personal experience, and also in the posters here that would appear to not be the case. Could it be that the way in which the FBI classifies cases has changed?
