Well, ADG, on your question how stupid people can be.. Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

The national geographic society did a survey recently. The participants were all young adults (18-24 years) from various countries (large countries I believe though, japan, US etc...)

They were shown a map of the middle-east and Asia, and they had to point out where on the map 11 different countries (that have made the news recently) are situated: Those countries were Russia, China, Israel, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi-Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Japan and the last one slips my mind , I think it was India...not sure

Anyway i made a straight 100% correct result, as it was ridiculously easy... I would say, alright if it would've been countries like Birma, Tadzjikistan or Kyrgizstan...

The US kids averaged 3.1, second last (Mexico was doomed with av 2.3 or so)... Deutschland wins witha whopping 6,7, followed closely by Japan with a hefty 6.2 if i recall correctly

Anyway: People are morons, everywhere in the world (I wonder though, do most young americans know Baghdad is the capital of Iraq etc..LoL!! in any case i found it most amusing... You should at least get Russia, China, Japan and Iraq right, right?... not for the yanks )

Of course the fact that their country was one of the ones they had to find would have helped a little bit.

I don't buy all this stuff about stupid Americans. I would get a perfect score on that, and so would everyone I know. They probably just test first graders in America and lie to us about it.

Cyclotron, I'm guessing you are an atypical american....

I did my PhD at Notre Dame, supposedly one of the top Universities in the US. During my 4 years there, I was asked two or three times how long it takes to drive from Notre Dame to Sweden. My usual answer (well, the drive through Siberia only takes a few weeks, it is the wait for Berings straight to close that is the real bottleneck) fell quite flat....

A friend of mine overheard one ND girl during the soccer championship ask someone "so, which team is Sweden and which team is Camerun"

This is a conversation another friend of mine once had with an american girl:

"where are you from?"

"Sweden"

"No, really, where are you from?"

"Really, Sweden"

"ah, come one, I'm not stupid. Sweden doesn't exist. It's the made up country the Swedish Bikini Team comes from"

I hope that says more about Notre Dame than the USA...

Seriously, though, I see quite a bit of this "Americans know nothing" stuff. I mean, if I asked anyone I know where Baghdad was, I would get some very funny looks. Most of these stories seem like anecdotes, not truths... but then again, maybe I'm just in the upper echelon of Americans in terms of geographical knowledge.

I could show most of the countries on a world map. Every North America, South American (mainland), European, North African and Asian country. However it would be harder for me to show sub-saharan African, Carribean and Oceanian countries...

Yes, I'm not too keen on the various Pacific Island states either. I think I could name most African countries, though.

I would be 100% on Europe/Americas/Asia (central Asia might be tough though, what with the various "stans" and so forth
). I would probably struggle with Africa quite a bit as well. I could probably do pretty well in North Africa, but sub-saharan Africa is just filled with so many odd little countries.
Angola? Zambia? Chad? Argh!

Well i read it in National Geographic and I don't suppose they put nonsense in it...

Ah I know i would get all the answers right as well, but sometimes, i talk to people that don't belong to the people i usually speak to (I've worked in a supermarket), and only then I understand that people get this **** wrong!

Btw most people on apolyton have at least minor intellectual capabilities (), but once you go reading community forums such as FPS forums where you get the classic amount of swearing, insulting and so on... now those ppl are stupid!!
