What about barbarians? Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

Just wondering...

As every spaniard know, there are a lot of stories about this dangerous people called barbarians. They are suposed to be some kind of beasts, definitely not human, who come from time to time to terrorize peaceful inhabitants of the civilized regions.

But the point is that no one in Spain as offered a prove about the existence of this barbarians, and I wonder. Are they real? If ther are real, where are they and why they haven't come to attack us? Should we prepare to defend us against them?

OOC: Just wondering about the barbarians setting. If I'm not wrong it was suposed to be random, but no barbarians have appeared yet and all we seem to forgot about them.

Did not the father of the first leader of our people, Togas the First, defeat the barbarian tribe known as the "Visigoths" and drive their people into servitude of us?

It would seem that there must then be many tribes of barbarians, ones who are like we once were ourselves... uncivilized and non-settled nomads with only war and destruction on their minds and in their hearts.

Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

They lurk in the trees and in the hills, using the sense of the deer, or the fox. I hear that they are guided by a strange spirit of the earth who appears to them in a dark mantle that obscures his face, and that he orders them on, driving them into wolves, to savage the people by stealth. They lie in wait, Senor Oliver, they lie in wait. Soon they will strike, but we must be ready for them.

Tired of ads?

I hear that some of the barbarians are like ourselves, but some have two arms, two heads, and four legs, or maybe six. Some have said that these two-headed barbarians have two other things, with four other things, and therefore are twice as dangerous to women as they are to men.

I also hear that barbarians like to wear white, because to them white is "freedom", whatever that is.

I also hear that the second type of barbarian dies young, both because their enormous appetites wear them out, and also because even though they are so big and have two mouths, they only have one thing in the back. Eventually it wears out, and one day either all their guts fall out, or they explode because things get bottled up inside and cannot work their way out.

Yes, white they wear indeed, yet they grow especially long beards to hide the blood. The barbarians come in many form indeed, but by far the most frightening are the ones in which they cease to be human at all, but are of a different type. The ogres, especially, are fearsome. They are large, tall, and stupid. They feast on blood, and fear the sun-light. The giants are also like them, and as you know, our ancient ancestors fought a race of giants, and the giant king's body eventually moldered into the ridge along which our city is built. The dwarves are also powerful, burrowing into the dark places of the earth to mine gold and silver, and fashioning trinkets and battle axes. All are to be feared.

They say that they wear white to contrast with the red blood they spill and the brown death some of them suffer in old age.

Apparently, though, they have some things in common. I hear that they do worship similar spirits, such as the spirits of the waters and the trees. They also do have a good funeral pyre now and then.

If the setting is random, the barbarians can be sedentary. Has someone experienced not seing a barbarian when the setting was NOT on sedentary ?

It must be sedentary, I think too. Unless we are damn lucky. Though we are the Spanish and the most blessed and glorious people in the world. Perhaps the spirits who guide and protect us scare them off, or perhaps just the very sight of the pleasant sky blue tunics we wear sends them running in fear or respect of our glorious greatness.
