Also, how did you make that spoiler blank out thingy?

Like this I think:

[spoiler] Text[ /spoiler]. but no space on the end tag.

All I did was hit reply with quote on his post and it showed the spoiler tags.

Hostile minerals?

Full PM-box? Change here!

I was thinking hostile minerals might have been something that is just bad for industry like really low quality iron ore or maybe even something that is hostile to your species itself (kryptonite?)

I, too, am a bit amazed with the sheer number of negative bonii... Seems finding a planet w/out some serious drawback or other will now have to be counted as a bonus all by itself. I'm not sure I like that at all.

Suffering from ads?

I hope, they use an algorithm which balances the good and bad specials you encounter.

But anyhow, the sheer number of Specials lets every Planet become a true individual.

Not such as in MOO2, where you would settle your fifth large, abundant, barren Planet which woudn´t differ from the other four Planets already settled, except for the fact, that it was in another Solar System.

Yup. Unless you have a dead planet, you'll always get volcanos. Silly designers.

Right. The more you look at the aggregate properties of large areas the more alike they seem. So what if England is rainier and France produces more wine-quality grapes? On a regional scale they'd just produce generic "food."

Do you think a game like this would distinguish between wheat and barley? Emmet or millet? Yams and sweet potatoes? Nope. If you happen to live in a place where one grows and the others don't the difference is important. In a game of sufficiently small scale you could make those things trade value factors, but not on this scale.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

About the drawbacks, sit back and take a look at our solar system. The vast majority of planets have quite serious drawbacks (for our species anyway), so it's hardly something to scream about in my opinion, its just (unfortunately) how things are! No doubt that various drawbacks are dependent on Galaxy age though, so it might not be as bad as it sounds, and im sure they won't ALL be in one session

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Then again, I'll be happy to live with the "real" ratio of useless real eastate in the galaxy when they give us the "real" amount of room to compensate for it. I haven't heard anybody mention there being a super extra huge setting with 100 billion star systems in Moo3 yet.

Not that it wouldn't be cool!

I think you're taking this list way out of context.

In the guide, they give example games for each race, going through the beginning X or so turns. Some things are very apparent from reading this.

1. Systems have a LOT more planets than they did in MOO2. The converse is that you don't always want to colonize every single planet that exists, because it'll cost lots to make it better.

2. System specials are pretty rare. Almost none were named in the guide, and they certainly didn't play a part in the choosing of the planets at the time.

I'd bet that one planet in every two systems has a special or so - and that's not a big deal, as I said, because those systems are going to have other things going for them.

Tired of ads?

Here you go, Grum. The list as "published" on ina:

A cache-varies
Abandoned Colony +10% research
Active volcanoes +5%-+70% terraforming cost
Ancient Battle Damage –20% to –90% hospoitable enviroment
Antaran X-obvious
Artificial planet- varies
Booby trap-planet explodes in 5-20 turns
Cavernous-Maximum population +1
Contraband(interesting one I think) adds 5 to 50 AU’s per turn, but depletes 1 “unit” of contraband per turn
Eccentric orbit- +20 to +100% terraforming cost, -75% bioharvesting
Electrical activity- -15% mining, -10% bioharvesting, -20% military, -35% space port
Entrapping Ecosystem—15% government, -95% recreation, -90% space port
FLU generator-no clue what this is, all descriptions are “variable” except that it is something positive
Erratic weather- -25% to –75% bioharvesting –can be teraformed out for 350-900 AU’s on terraforming
HE Geomagnetic fields- -1% to –25% terra +10% pop growth, -20% manufacturing, -50% research, -15% military
HE Huge Storms- +10 to +200% maintenance +10% to +200% building cost, -50% bioharvesting
HE meteor shower-variable-negative
HE Tectonic instability-variable-negative
Hostile Gasses-+50% to +150% maintenance cost, +50 to +150% building cost, -10% manufacturing, -10% research, -30% population growth, -5% military-terraformed out after 500-2,200 AU’s worth of terraforming

Sick of typing out all the descriptions and I’m running out of time, I’ll describe the ones which aren’t obvious…if you have any specific questions on one, ask and I’ll post the detailes

Hostile Flora
Hostile Huge Animal(-20% bioharvesting, +15% recreation odly enough…ride the woly mammoth?)
Hostile Insent
Hostile Large Animal
Hostile Microbe
Hostile Mineral
Hostile small animal
Magnate Civilization(no description, cept its positive, I am as clueless as you are)
Natural Wells
Natural Wonders
Pharmacopoeia(helps everything except manufacturing and government)
Polluted
Random Research
Random Tech
Rapid Rot
Rare animals
Rare fuels
Rare gems
Rare metals
Rare petrochemicals
Rare plants
Rare radioactive
Rescue leader
Ruins

SENTIENT PLANET (-20% government, -75% recreation, cant be terraformed out….I think this is very bizarre lol-it sounds boring, they could of done alot more to make this interesting-they comment that "sentient planets dont play well with others")

Splinter Colony
Stratosphere ring
Thriving ecosystem

Im VERY unhappy that "xenomorphs" the black aliens from "alien" didnt make it as a planetary special(I remember ALOT of people wanted it when they did the contest for specials a while ago-I guess the hostile animals come close though..........plus a certain nameless species may be similar .

Thanks Moomin.

Its a very varied list. I just hope as people have mentioned before that the incidence of specials is not too high. Having almost every planet with a special would become very tiring after a while. A bit like Star Trek where every planet has a weird (and usually humaniform) alien species with a problem for the crew to solve.

FYI, the latest screenshots of the 'Start New Game' menu have a drop-down box for selecting 'few' planetary specials.

I don't know how many settings there are but it seems that if you love/hate wierd planets, the options are available to customise.
