Thats correct, a nation generally refers to ethnicity and a state is political. A nation state is a state comprised of one ethnicity... Israel tries to pull this off.

And the US is made up of many many many nations technically speaking, while it is one state.

Depends on your understanding of nation - To me the States of America are not nations. I understand a nation to be a sovereign political entity, states to be autonomous political entities (subserviant to the nation). Countries are a collection of people with similar culture, ideals, history or belief.

I suggest you ask Roland for his definitions.

I don't care about Roland's definitons . I'm using International Relations (IR) definitions.

Nation is a group of people who share similar ethnicity and culture. A state is a political boundary. Nation-state is a state that has the majority of its residence belonging to one nation.

This is why the German nation expands beyond Germany (into Poland, Czech Republic, etc.), while the German state is simply the borders.

Country is simply another word for state, but it usually not used in IR.

No it's not backwards, simply an attempt to explain the tortuous geopolitical history of the creation of the United Kingdom.

'Ethnic nations' included in the United Kingdom could conceivably be the Cornish (once occupiers of the Cornish speaking kingdom of Kernow) the Welsh and the Scots, and the English. And the Celt/Viking island nation of Man, and the Channel Islands off France, some of whose inhabitants would still be descended from the Norman settlers, and not all ex-Essex eurotrash tax evaders. And of course, the Orcadians and Shetland Islanders, whose islands once belonged to the Crown of Norway.

Since the creation of the Irish Free State, the Irish cannot logically be considered (as an entire nation) to be part of the United Kingdom, and the political entity of the Six Counties of Northern Ireland is neither by ethnicity, or culture or heritage entirely Irish, or part of the 'Irish nation' - having a current majority of the population descended from English and Scots Protestant settlers, who arrived in three main waves of settlement.

In political terms the 19th Century Act of Union bound together the three separate kingdoms/crowns of Ireland, Scotland and England, together with the principality of Wales. So what had been Great Britain (to distinguish it from 'Little Britain', Brittany) became the United Kingdom.

Wales (English)/Cymru (Welsh), the native people of Wales speak English and/or Welsh, although some of those that speak Welsh would dismiss those that speak only English as not being Welsh people, just British.
(Used to be called Cambria long, long ago.)

To clear up a technical point from earlier, at the moment Wales is a principality of England, although it does have a distinct language and culture so is a completely different country (a collection of people with similar culutre, ideals, history).
