Diplomacy and cost of war Get a bigger avatar today!

Freeciv is a really versatile game. Thanks to all those who contribute to its development.

The todo-list says version 2.0 should habe diplomacy. I would appreceate that very much and I make some suggestions.

War should be much more expensive and its costs should increase with the duration of war. Rearmament speeds up economy as far as production of everyday goods including food is not endangered. But war always ment and means distruction and - if not at once but after a short time - starvation, loss of wealth, inflation etc.

In freeciv war can last almost forever and still your nation may make proges. I do not think that's realistic. In real wartimes population mostly declines!

War usualy does not fall out of the skies. War begins with reinforcements and mouvements of troops. As soon as a country recognizes such a behaviour it will be alerted and react by asking his neighbour to partly disarm or to withdraw its troops.

By the way: To implement such functionality freeciv needs borders.

What is your opinion?

Greetings

Gunter

So the 2.0 todo list is going to have diplomacy...

Opinions on war in Freeciv...let's see...

A war " tax"-system could be implemented for military units. In the same way that units in the field cause unhappiness under a republic or democracy. This penalty could take the form of extra support shields or gold. A different system was used CtP and Civ3 but I would like to see Freeciv stick to it's Civ1/2 "roots".

Important note:
I should also point out that Freeciv, like it's commercial counterparts is at foremost a game. Not a realistic historical simulation. Freeciv should not be bogged down in features that might make it more realistic but also less fun to play.

Balancing gameplay can be tricky...You don't know how one feature will affect something else. I also see that danger in my own suggestion.

Borders were implemented in the Alpha Centauri version of Freeciv. I've never played Freeciv AC so I can't really comment on how workable this is in practice.

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Yes, FreecivAC has borders, and a borders patch that can be applied on normal freeciv to give borders. Unfortunately, this patch was never completely finished, so it can't be added to the main distribution. If someone would only step up to the challenge of finishing it (see its README for what is left to do)...
