My girlfriend's parents hate my guts. For various reasons, none of which I can really change.
Partly, because of who I am. Liberal left wing moderate Catholic. Exactly the oposite of Sarah's parents (Sarah herself is a lot more like me though, or else I wouldn't have dated her in the first place).
But mostly, her mom hacked into her 19-year-old daughter's e-mail without her knowledge (I'm not making this up), and read some of the stuff I wrote to Sarah about. Some of it was about how I felt about her parents actions. Sarah agrees with me on those things (or more specifically, I agree with her since she's the one who brings it up), but of course her mom thinks I'm the bad guy (eventhough she had no right to read her daughters private e-mails).
So they hate my guts. I'm not allowed to call her at home, nor come over. And although Sarah has often talked about leaving home, I don't think she will.
It's one shitty situation, to say the least. I'd have ended things a long time ago because of the crap her parents put me (and us) through, but I care deeply for the girl. What should I do?

First tell me you're no older than 22ish, then I'll agree
Bullsh*t Bullsh*t Bullsh*t Bullsh*t
You're a man, and as I can tell a responsible one. They can't pull this without serious reason, like a drug habit, abuse etc. If they're simply scared you're going to take her away and perhaps change some of her ideological thinking, fight them
Like I said, you're a man. Her Dad is spent, her Mom is panicking of age - make your own terms to see her. I am assuming there still is some media left by which you can arrange to meet, or that you see each other at school?

I'm just one year and two months older than her.
yes.

far more than most my age.

My record is pretty clean. I'm not a virgin though, obviously, and that's also something her parents don't quite like. (little do they know what I've been doing with their daughter )

That's probably the case. But how fight them?
quote: Like I said, you're a man. Her Dad is spent, her Mom is panicking of age - make your own terms to see her. I am assuming there still is some media left by which you can arrange to meet, or that you see each other at school? |
yeah, we can still see eachother. But not often, cause of all the crap.
quote: Her parents are ****ed-up. If they don't seem to care about the well-being of your girlfriend, only about themselves and their values. |
You know that, I know that, but they clearly don't.
quote: Maybe get dear old dad a birthday present, its too bad you missed christmas. You have to at least try and be civil with her parents, otherwise they lock her in the house for a couple months. |
I tried that for months. I either wasn't ass sucking enough by their standards, or they simply didn't care. I spend quite a bit on them...and got nothing out of it, obviously.
And now with my e-mails that her mom read, I doubt I can just patch this up by saying sorry and bringing flowers. (and I'm not sorry, she has no right invading on our privacy like that).
quote: Everyone's parents, except maybe your mother, hate you. |
no, they all like me. My friend's parents. My ex-gf's parents. Just not these two. Well, it's mainly her mom pulling all the crap.

Tell her parents that you are pregnant and carrying her child. NO! That's not it. Tell her your parents are pregnant, and later when you've been together for awhile it'll turn out to be a false pregnancy! Hers! She's pregnant too.
Here's a joke for you...
When does a Porto Rican become a Spaniard?
When he marrys your daughter.
You too can become a Spaniard, even if you are not Porto Rican, get it?

No but seriously folks, don't worry about the parent thing, not many parents approve of their child's mate..just blow it off and I am sure they will have to deal with YOU especially since your GF likes you. Let them develope the ulcer..you're to young to worry about things like that.!

The basic deal is this (a conversation I had with my parents over a quarter century ago, and most kids have sooner or later with their parents) If she wants to live in their house, she has to live under their rules, like it or not.
She can sneak, she can draw lines in the sand, argue, whine, deal with it, whatever, but the basic deal is that the situation can ultimately escalate to go by their rules, or get out.
If she wants to live off their financial support, under their roof, but live the way she wants, that's hypocritical. It's her call what she wants to do, and your call as well, but being a rebel without a clue while sponging off mommy and daddy is kid crap. If she wants to call the tune and live by her own rules, she can belly up to the bar and pay her own way 100%. That's the price of freedom and adulthood.

HAHAHAHAHA, you've already f*cked her?
Regardless of what some dipsh*t alcoholic sheriff of a father like MtG can come up with, you've won half the battle. March on, and love!

Don't listen to these goofs about fighting, that will get you no where. Now, I wonder what the ratio of warhawks to people with girlfriends is
No, but seriously, you need to go with the flow, no matter how fascist her parents are... thats the way life is, and trust me, if they like you, things will be infinitely easier on you. But they don't even have to like you alot, they just have to tolerate you.
quote: Partly, because of who I am. Liberal left wing moderate Catholic. Exactly the oposite of Sarah's parents (Sarah herself is a lot more like me though, or else I wouldn't have dated her in the first place). |
Of course you can change this! At least as far as they're concerned. Ok, so you know they're pretty conservative and non catholic. This means don't go to their house and start preaching liberal catholic rhetoric. And if its your apearance that clues them off, maybe leave the skater outfit and Che Guevera t-shirt at home next time But of course I don't actually know how you dress. The point is, your political agenda should be irrelevant to how much they like you because they shouldn't even know! If you're deadset against war in Iraq and her dad asks you what you think, just take a moderate stance. You don't even have to agree, or just simply say "I don't really know what to think". Then as soon as you leave the house, you can start protesting against the WTO again!
Its not selling out, its just the way the world works. Like MtG said, its their house, and its their rules... being a rebel without a clue is kid's stuff. Besides, you should want as good of a relationship with her parents as possible, because it makes life EASY!
Now as for her mom "hacking" into her e-mail, that probably wasn't the case. Its very very difficult to hack into mailboxes these days, especially popular web-based ones, and ESPECIALLY if you're a middle aged housewife She probably just guess the password or something... tell your girlfriend not to make it so easy next time. It doesn't make it right, but like I said, you have to go with the flow. Get her another account somewhere that only you and her know about, then there's no worrying.
And as for making things better with her parents, I don't know, it looks like you fudged it up royal already. I would suggest maybe writing her parents a very "sincerere" letter of apology (written, not e-mail) in which you take blame for everything (don't let pride get in the way).
Of course, this is only if you think she's worth it. If she's a loudmouth, take this opportunity to hit the road while you can.
