	Win98 Passwords - how to get rid of them? Remove this text

On my laptop running win98 I have a password, but of course it's a stupid system because you can just click cancel and windows boots.

I've looked in many obvious places for how to turn the damn thing off, but haven't had any luck. There must be a way to do this.

I know someone here knows. Little help?

The way I got rid of this when using 98 was to install TweakUI and set it to auto-login.

TweakUI should be installed anyway, helps set windows up the way you want it, and can be found at http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui

Thanks pal, I'll give that I try.

Also, FYI: I decided to reformat the hard drive of the laptop after the config.sys file was corrupted. After you helped me get my g/f's files off it ( ) there was nothing of value on there anyway.
It could probably have been fixed, but there was so much junk on it a reformat was probably the best plan. It runs great now.
If only my g/f's brother hadn't set a windows password ....

And to remove old passwords (and logins)...
There is a file in c:\windows ending in .pwl, named after whoever created the password (ie: skanky.pwl). Simply delete this one, create your own, and you should be right.

I was just about to ask how to delete the old password and set my own so I would know what to tell the auto-login thingy.

There is a registry key that changes whether the login screen comes up or not. I don't know which one it is offhand. Searching the Microsoft site might tell you.

Alternately, if you change your network preferences (should be in the control panel or right click on the network neighborhood) and choose the standard Windows login (as opposed to the Microsoft Networks Client or Microsoft Family login) I don't think the thing will pop up. I had it set up this way on my old computer. I can't guarantee this will work, but I think this is how I did it.

No, you have to set XP to make you login.
