AI use of Nuclear Weapons Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Sorry if this has been asked elsewhere.....

I have occasionally embarked on the risky business of nuclear war in CivIII, a payed the price for it too on some occasions.

But I have never seen the AI use nukes against another AI player. Has anyone else seen this happen, and if so have you any idea what provoked it?

Yeah it seems to happen all the time in my games. But I always have to reload it because of the AI unke-using bug mentioned in other PTW threads.

The AI will use nukes against another AI if:

1. If the nukee has used nukes before; or
2. It finds itself between a rock and a hard place and is practicing a "survival of the fittest", last-ditch effort to stay in the game.

All I know about AI use of nukes is that the AI does not understand MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction.)

Then again, every piece of information helps

hi ,

the AI tends to go in nuclear arms races with some , when civ Y build an ICBM , civ X builds one more

in several games the AI launched tacticals , in one game the AI launched at an aircraft carrier group , consisting of two aircraft carrier's and support ships , but this is more an exception then a rule , ....

if the AI uses nuke's he tends to use them towards stacks and when he has gotten a couple on his head , ...

the occasional surprise attack with ICBM's happens also , .....

have a nice day

From my experience, very rarely will the AI use nukes unless another Civ has used nukes. Even if the AI is being slaughtered, it won't use their nukes if I have not used them. It usually places the global environment over it's very own survival.

hi ,

well if you eliminate the treat of global warming in the editor you get funny outcomes sometimes , .....

sometimes the AI starts to nuke , every time it has build one , and at other times the AI sits and watches itself being nuked without responding at all , even if they have several ICBM's , ......

Tired of ads?

The AI will NEVER use nukes in any of my games unless I do so first. This is typical of many other situations in Civ: the player is the trigger. Once I do use nukes, though, it's basically fair game for every other civ in the world.
More to the point, I have seen two AI use nukes against each other. I was allied with the Koreans, who were on the southern part of the map as I was moving up the Zulu continent. I had used nukes in an earlier war against the Babylonians. I heard the missile .wav play, but nothing happened. Then I got up to Zimbabwe and I saw that the effects of a nuclear strike existed, so I assume the Koreans nuked them.

i was at war with germany, who hit me with 3 surprise icbms on my main cities, so i retaliated with tacticals, at which point france declared war on me, after we had been allied against the germans (which i thought was cool)

so i nuked the french and the romans declared war on me as well, this is every civ in teh world against me
never had a proper nuclear war before so this is a very interesting game - germany and france are both bigger than me but im sure i can beat them
none of the AIs have yet hit each other though, as far as i am aware...

Suffering from ads?

I never use nukes and the AI never has either. Is there better use of nukes against naval vessels in CIV3? I ask because I remember being disappointed at either not being able to use them (at all) against massed naval vessels in civ2 or that they only took out one vessel.

hi ,

well , imagine you have two aircraft carriers with escort ships , together with some subs and last but not least a couple transports with escort ( read shore cleaners ) steaming towards you , .......

and they all move within a small range of each other or they have to move true a "chokepoint" , would you not love to nuke them

I've never needed to try in CIV3. I usually dont even bother to build a navy.

In civ2 though the AI would sometimes build and stack huge navies perfect for a nuke strike but as I recall it didnt work because it would only take out either one ship, one square, or none at all (I dont remember which). I think it was a conflict between the pollution from the nuke and the fact that pollution cant appear or be cleaned at sea. Of course on land a nuke would kill the units in the target square and surrounding squares.

So my question is what effect a nuke has on naval targets in civ3?

A nuke will effect a stack of ships just as it does a stack of land units. Any and/or all units can be destroyed or damaged.

hi ,

the ships tend to sink , and the damaged ones tend to get back to the nearest port

it does not mean that you dont build a navy that they dont build one

hi ,

sometimes they do , sometimes they dont , sometimes a couple do , ..... it all depends on a great deal of factors , civilizations that you learned a lesson or two in the past are not keen on getting an other lesson again , however the exception tends to confirm the rule as always

Got spare money?

all I will say is you better have at least one ICBM or strategically place Tactical for each enemie city before you start a-Nukin' an a-fussin'

ok I will ALSO say no I never saw any AI country nuke another...one time I nuked it up a little and got nuked the next turn by Egypt and China....seeing my core cities hit (first time ever being nuked) made me a little verklempt (hehe or however you spell that )...

That's a bit too much, I'd say. maybe one for every one of his core cities.

One of my favorite tactics is when an enemy city is very high in culture, nuke it and land a paratrooper or marine in it, and raze it.

I set up networks,

I have my silent nuke subs with at least one tacticle nuke (mine carry 2), they hit the major citys in their range.

Only if i'm out of tacticle nukes or the citys out of range, then i fire off an ICBM.

I've always got a tacticle nuke out side my enemys capital in peace time, if hes real big that nuke will be fired the turn he declares war!

The AI's in my game just had a huge Nuclear exchange.. 30 nukes must have been exchanged. the second world war just broke out and now there are some portions of the map devoid of any cities as the AI nukes and raizes cities in its military advance. lucky me i'm not at war with anyone as i'm still 2 turns away from Intergrated Defense.. I have not used any nukes in this game and the AI's (india no less!) has taken it on its self to nuke first.

its a huge map, regent level, i started out with 12 civs, i just blitzed the Arzecs and placated the other AI's so that i would not be nuked. i'll see if i got a saved game from before all the nukes started falling. the game has no been modded at all. i can only find about 20 or so nuked cities.. i guess some places were nuked twice.

India was the first to lob nukes as they were getting over run by just about everyone at the time.

the file is a little to big to post. i can put it up on an ftp for ya. the link is:
