Why do people fall for the Atkin's diet??? Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

If one knew human biology and evolution enough one would know that our bodies arn't made for eating a lot of animal material, that is why we have problems with cholesterol (which is found only in animals) and saturated fat. We humans need about 60% of our food to be carbohydrates, 20% protein, and 20% unsaturated fat. This stems from the diet our Ausralopithicine ape ancestors; who got carbs from fruits, vegetables. Protein and fat came from nuts. Meat was not a part of the diet until the invention of stone tools 2.5 million years ago.

We had this discussion before.

In fact from all the evidence of that debate, I think the Atkins diet is just as good as any other. Vlad (I believe) said our bodies are BEST made for digesting meat.

Carbs make you fat.

Imran is right.

Cholesterol problems are usually linked to processed sugar, starchy carbs, and hydrogenated oils.

Personally I think the food pyramid is a joke.

Atkins does work for many people, it all comes down to how your insulin system works.

Yeah I am really nervous about this whole Iraq thing. I agree that whatever is going to happen is going to be unexpected.

While I think the whole "it's all about oil" theory is a load of BS, you do have to wonder how personal it is, I mean Saddam tried to kill Bush Sr. and likewise.

I read that there was a 1000 lb. bomb that almost got Saddam one time but it hit the car in front of his. (But then you would figure a 1000 lb bomb would knock him out with it).

Actually, our bodies are made to eat both meat and veggies. Grains are relatively recent to our diet, but starchy roots and foods have always been part of the human diet, even before meat. BTW, australopithicines are side branches of humanity, not our ancestors.

Meat isn't bad for us, provided we live a life-style that allows us to burn the fat we take in with it. Since we no longer do this, we need to adapt our diet to leaner meats and less fat. If all you do, however, is replace them with lots more carbs, however, you aren't doing yourself any good.

The food pyramid is actually quite good, as it concentrates on those foods we should eat most of, fruits and veggies.

Ya, the appendix is often referred to as a leftover organ that is no longer used, that used to help humans digest raw meat back in the day. So we are omnivores who can eat pretty much everything.

Thanks. I still have a ways to go but I've come a long way since this summer.

I also think the pyramid is a joke. The vegetables should be at the bottom, followed by meats and dairy, and then the grains/ pasta and fruits, with fats and oils at the top. It doesn't surprise me that the only product you see that goofed up pyramid on is Cereal or Bread. Have you ever actually eaten 8-11 servings of grains/cereals a day?

I remember a couple years ago when I actually tried to eat the food pyramid diet. I figured out that in my tubby condition I was still eating less daily than the food pyramid recommended! When I cut the cereals and grains down by half and combined that with exercise, I started to lose a pound a week. But that's nothing compared to when I discovered Atkins back in 1999. Granted I gained the weight back (something I'm not going to repeat this time) after staying off the diet for about 20 months (also something I'm not going to repeat this time).

Physically I've found no problems with the Atkins diet. I feel great and I'm losing weight at a rate of about 3-4 pounds each week (and that's without exercise). When I do exercise, I lose 4-5 pounds each week. I hope to reach my weight goal sometime between April and July.

Um, no. The appendix is for digesting roughage. Fiber is stored in the appendix for long stretches of time until bacteria break down the stuff.

Complex carbs arn't fattening, simple ones (like sugar) are. I also think the food pyramid shood be changed. The position of vegies and starches should be switched, and. Vegies would form the bottom, fish and fruit form the next level. The 3rd level is home to dairy, poultry and starches, and red meat + fats form the top.

Che, the genus australopithicus IS ancesteral to the genus Homo, look in every recent book on human evolution, they say Homo evolved from Australopithicus afracanus, Australopithicus robustus, or Australopithicus afarensis.

We also have the teeth of a mostly herbivorous animal; our molars are made for eating tough gritty plant material. We have thicker enamel on our teeth than any other primate, showing that our ancestor's diet changed from fruit eating to eating nuts and vegies. The small amount of meat we did eat then was mostly fish, which is why fish is good for you. (Brain food, maybe that's why we have such large brains.) We are not adapted to digest land animal fat, that is why we have problems with digesting cholesterol and saturated fats, we didn't start eating alot of animal products until we invented stone tools.

Put an end to popups!

But Odin then I could point out the big ass canine teeth we have that are used for ripping meat off and also the front teeth that are great for cutting. Those meat ripping and cutting teeth number around 16.

Take a look at many primates, who do eat lots of meat. (I think there are cases of chimps who are actually cannibals).

I do agree that fish is the best meat, salmon is a high quality source of protein and fat.

I also disagree that many complex carbs (such as white bread, white rice, and especially bleached flour) are big culprits to obesity.

Brown carbs are king though.

carbs by themselves don't lead to obesity. Calories lead to obesity. Americans eat too much plain and simple. I didn't go on any fancy Adkins diet. I just started eating less- and whalaa! I lost weight.

It is not normal to get a triple bacon cheeseburger supersized at McDonald's. At least not for normal sized folks. And I have had a triple cheeseburger before

Excessive protein intake in a single sitting, or overall, can overstress the liver and screw up it's function. Mostly the effect is temporary, but chronic excess intake can interfere with the liver's ability to produce several necessary enzymes. The liver is involved heavily in all protein metabolism/catabolism, as well as a bunch of other functions that especially affect overall energy and health levels.

think about this though, diets alone dont work, you need to also excercise. If you excercise you can eat almost anything and it wont make you fat. if you take in calories and dont burn them you will get fat.

so the atkins diet works on the premise you arent taking as many calories as you are burning because of increase of protien consumption.

really though, just excersize...
