Politics is the art of the possible and it is quite possible for Edwards to get the Democratic nomination. I wouldn't write him off so quickly.

Edwards is young. I don't think he is seriously running for President. He just wants to get his name out there so he can win in 2008.

Hillary will be pissed if he does run against her. The liberal are telling all democrats not to run in 08 because they want Hillary to be the only candidate.

Like it was quite possible for Elizabeth Dole to get the Republican nomination in 2000?

Yeah, it looks nice now, but in a year people will ask if anyone thought Edwards had a chance. He's a first term Senator, without any leadership positions, and it isn't like he has other political experience, he was a trial lawyer. He won't get the nod.

Edwards is 49. This is exactly the right age to run for president. Clinton, after all, was re-elected when he was 49.

Simply based on his age, I would suggest that Edwards has to be ranked among the favorites, not among the dark horses.

Sure..... if you overlook everything else that matters in politics .

He would be a good Veep material, but NO WAY a President. He couldn't get close to knocking off Kerry (who is the actual favorite... no matter what the Hillary numbers are) or Libermann.

I'd say Libermann is in front of Kerry simply because he's going to be inheriting Gore's, and thus Clinton's, campaign money raising machine.

Yeah, but it ain't his 'turn'. Kerry is the man in the light right now. It's kinda like Dole in '96. The whole idea of letting the man have his chance in the sun.

And Kerry is more powerful in the party.

I don't remember Bill Clinton being "the man in the light" or being powerful in the Democratic Party before he won the nomination in '92. Seems some of us are forgetting our history. And why would anyone use Dole as an example of how to pick a candidate? Ughh...

Edwards has the support of the DLC and Clinton himself, so I think it is far more likely that he will inherit Clinton's fundraising machine and political advice. It's happening right now, if the rumors floating around are true.

Yes, it does seem like that. Clinton gave the keynote address in 1988, during Dukaus's campaign. He was the head of the DLC, which was gaining immense power in the party. He was a highly successful governor of a Southern state. He was definitely a good candidate, and someone 'in the light'.

Edwards has the same chance of gaining the Democratic nomination as Lamar Alexander had in the Republican nomination of 2000.

Clinton likes Edwards because he believe the dems need a southern candidate to have a chance to break the republicans control of the south. Still, with the right running mate Leiberman might actually make it.

Kerry has a snowballs chance in hell of getting elected. I remember his campaign in 1992 and it was undistinguished. He's a classic New England liberal who can't even pretend to be a moderate during election times so that means he can't carry the west (other the California) or the south (other then Florida). So it would be impossible for him to win.

Before the Enron caused electricity crisis a year and a half ago California governor Grey Davis was in good shape to run. Since the electricity crisis and the budget deficit though Davis has seen his chance of running for President drop to zero.

Clinton is right. The Republicans aren't the only ones with a "southern strategy". Gore's great failure was that he couldn't carry the south, not even Tennesee.
