I'm guessing he's really looking for the VP slot.
The interesting question is -- why he's giving up the senate seat after only one term?

It's always fun to analyse what kind of bs people say when they want to be elected:

"I want to be a champion for ...regular people"
No? Really? There's so many candidates that explicity runs for the unregular people.

"A millionaire who made his fortune as a trial lawyer"
Means he got his money by lying and making absurd demands, cashing in on it himself. Perfect for a perfect president.

"If the American people want a lifelong politician in the White House, that's not me,"
Even I, a non-american, knows it for 4-8 years only for everyone including lawyers.

"He said his campaign would provide an alternative to an administration "that's run largely by insiders and too often for insiders." "
Means he will lose, unless he's actually lying... But he can't be doing that, can he?

"Edwards said, adding that his campaign would focus on bolstering the nation's security and strengthening the economy"
So that makes him into a alternative? Bush is surely not talking about security and all those other candidates wants to weaken the economy! Yes...

I don't think he'll get the nomination, but he is the only Dem being mentioned who stands a chance in hell of taking a southern state or two. And I think we all remember what happens when Dems don't take a southern state or two.

Well, he probably stands a decent chance at taking the delegates from the South, though he will probably be weak in New Hampshire and Iowa which are critical primaries. So if he could capture all the Southern delegates plus one or two other states from outside the region, or the entire rest of the country splits over the other candidates, he may stand a chance. Still I think he will need to find some way to distinguish from the other candidates however. If he is just another "hey look at me I am another politician who wants to be prsident" type of caniddate, he will go the way of Orrin hatch did on the Republican side.

There was some amusing debates on the "news" channels this afternoon, with various talkingheads (mostly conservatives) badmouthing him for having little political experience, no familiarity with foreign policy, etc.

Of course, not a single solitary Democrat commentator had the cojones to say, "Oh, you mean he's just like George W. Bush."

My first impression of him is that he reminds me of Clinton. My first impression of Clinton when I first saw him was that he was a shady car salesmen, and sounded like David Duke.

Though, this guy seems to convey some sense of strength, backbone, and moral leadership that Clinton lacked. I don't see this guy flipflopping

That he was a personal injury lawyer does take him down a couple of notches, but when they say that insurance companies feared him, that takes him back up a couple of notches.

They said People Magazine named him to their 50 Sexiest People List.

Ha ha, I only briefly recall what he looks like, but is he really that good looking?
Anyway, my knowledge of him is pretty limited, but he does seem like as good a candidate as you can reasonably expect from the Dems, and he is from the south so that helps his chances greatly.

Well he just looked like an average guy to me. But I remember that when Clinton came out alot of women were saying how good he looked and I was like, what? Maybe it's the whole power thing that makes him look sexy.

Edwards has been in tight with the trial lawers for years. Republicans could use that if they have sense enough (and proposals enough) to campaign on the three T's: Trade, Taxes, and Tort Reform. I would be willing to listen to his positions on other issues.

There's a disturbing little video clip out there where John Edwards is trying to get to the podium in a Senate debate, and Hillary Clinton, who is speaking at the time, tells him "Sit down, John, and look pretty." Wonder how long until somebody drags this out.

I wish, just once, a Democrat could be for all Americans and not engage in this class warfare crap. This is the main reason I hate and despise most Democrats.

I have not heard similar remarks for Joe Lieberman or from Dianne Feinstein. Nor for that matter, even from Hillary Clinton.

Why do you think that Edwards doesn't have a chance of getting the nomination? He's the candidate of choice for the DLC and it sounds like Clinton is advising him behind the scenes. He's also a southerner, which is always an advantage. And he has the best fundraising base (trial lawyers) out of any of the Dem candidates. With the incredibly weak slate of potential Democratic candidates in 2004, Edwards would seem to have a good chance of winning the nomination.

THUMBNAIL GUIDE TO GOP REASONING:

1) When Repuublicans attack the poor -- as they do every election cycle, and did most recently in their hilarious assertion that the poor aren't paying their fair share of taxes -- it's just politics.

2) When Dems point out the obvious -- that the government is beholden to welthy special interests; that the poor are getting poorer and the middle class is stagnating, etc. -- that's "class warfare."

This isn't a guess, but someone could ascend to the presidency from the vice presidency due to the death or resignation of the previous president and finish out the term. If he served less than 1/2 of that term (ie the former pres dies after 2 or more years in office), he is still eligible to run for two more full terms. So the absolute maximum is 10 years, though it is unlikely to happen.

Exactly. The VP can fill in for up to 2 years for the previous president without it counting as one of his two terms. Thus 10 years instead of 8 years is the theoretical max.

Johnson became president when Kennedy died. He could have run for reelection in '68, but chose not to. Had he won in '68, he would have served nearly 10 years.

He hasn't run for reelection (in the Senate) yet. For all the Democrat charges that Bush had no political experience, he overwhemingly won his reelection campaign. THAT made him a viable candidate, and gave him enough experience in politics.

Edwards doesn't even have a full term!
