why do people make these assumptions about me?

No I would not support a thread against rap lyrics.

Just because I like rock music you assume I don't like rap? I was listening to rap when it first came out in the 80's sonny boy. I listen to old school rap and gangsta rap.

In fact I like most types of music. I also like some reggae, blues, and jazz music. I don't just like "Rock"

P.S. you know nothing about me. I've made numerous statements about growing up poor. I grew up in downtown Las Vegas, and went to Las Vegas high school on 7th street (they have since moved it). I'm not some suburb kid. What's with these stereotypes?

Just because I listen to rock doesn't mean I'm from the suburbs.

P.S. you didn't include the smiley from my first post in this thread. I was kidding of couse. I just thought the thread title was narrow minded that's all.

I would agree with you but unfortunatley even rap has become watered down.

To get the really good rock stuff, you have to go back in time the the 1960s, that's when it was still fresh and going in alot of different directions.

Mick Jagger, for example, can play any instrument you put in his hands. The Stones would often go off to different countries when they recorded an album so they could find new sounds and to keep their stuff fresh.

After 1970, the whole thing turned into crap and settled into the old formula of singer, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, and drums. It's really sad that has been the same formula has been used in rock for over 30 years now.

I think it was really PATHETIC when everyone was so excitied 2 years ago because that group Travis came out with a song that actually had a BANJO in it. "Oh my! TThey actually used a BANJO!!!!"

Ok, sonny boy, granted, you like other types of music. But then why did you immediately bash this thread when Speer just asked a question? If you noticed, he first asked if rock musicians write their lyrics, and then based his question on the assumption that his initial belief was corrrect.

I know what you mean about old rock, that was the kind of rock that made me go on the 6 year tangent in the first place. Old (british mainly) rock was very innovative, and enjoyable. Plus, they had a level of cockiness to them about themselves, while today it seems the cockiness is in an artistic sense which I just find pretentious.

Rap took alot of the good qualities of rap like the old school stones cockiness and kept it pure.

And I also disagree about it being watered down... maybe what you see on TV, but those same rappers (some of them) are still staying fresh and innovative on the underground level through mixtapes and unreleased stuff. You'd be surprised.

Actually I agree with this also. There was a time when the mainstream stuff was still high quality and fresh. Some of the underground stuff you are talking about is still amazing, though, and is just on another level of creativeness that blows everything else away. We have a couple of shows after hours on the weekends on the air here where they feature local underground artists and sometimes I will stay up and drive around so I can listen to it even at 2 in the morning because that's the only time you get to hear "the good stuff."

There are some Berkeley/Oakland hybrid rappers that have been getting some critical acclaim of late - some of it is really well done, imo. Curious if you young'uns think so.


There is an entire genre of music called Singer/Songwriter where the lyrics are of central importance. Most have a folk base in the old Acuff-Rose tradition, and while the music is designed to be simple, the lyrics are much better art than the dullard "we will, we will rock you" fare.

I can't remember the name of the DJ in Oakland that wins the turntable contests every year and is considered the Micheal Jordan of that world and that nobody else comes close but they all copy the new things he comes up with.

I was just joking on bashing this thread. I have nothing against this thread. I just though the title was narrow minded.

Sometimes the way Speer thinks, it seems like he's never really experienced the world outside of where he lives. Not everything is like that in Philadelphia. And I don't think he's heard enough rock music to say that they don't write their own lyrics. He only based this thread on a few posts in the Shakira thread when someone mentioned that Bono doesn't write that many U2 songs.

As for pop music even I can't say much. I don't know enough about the music to say if they write their own lyrics. I'm sure some do.

As for other types of music, I'm not sure. Did Frank Sinatra write his own lyrics? That's a good question.

I just felt the thread title was amusing.

MarkG if you are a good photographer, there is lots of money to be had with selling images.

Some of those images that you can buy from the Getty Company routinely sell for 2 or 300 dollars. Even the crappy ones go for like $50 a pop.
