Turkey has invaded Iraq!! Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Gotcha!

quote:

Turkish newspapers report that between 10,000 and 15,000 troops have been deployed along the frontier and units have crossed into northern Iraq, although the military command denies there has been a major military buildup.

But seriously though, some Turkish troops have moved into Northern Iraq, and there is a buildup on the Turkish border with Iraq. I think they are doing it to prepare for any sort of humanitarian crisis that might emerge from fleeing Iraqis.

Others will claim it is to prevent a formation of Kurdistan in case the government in Iraq falls.

Hmm ... I believe Turkey has sent its forces into northern Iraq on more than one occasion, typically in pursuit of Kurdish rebels.

Well I'm waiting for 21st Feb, but others say America will attack earlier than that.

I get the feeling America is trying to scare Iraq into peace.

To scare into peace? This war will happen at all cost, the only way around it is that Iraqis dump Saddam. I'd really love to see that one. Some guys in the US would have to bite in their own as$ when this war can't happen.

But like Gatekeeper said: It's not unusual that Turkish forces penetrate Iraqi territory. And they're definitely there to take control of northern Iraq instead of having nationalist Kurds taking power.

If Saddam was out of the picture then there's be no need for a war to oust him and everyone would be happy.

Bush is the type of guy who hopes personal grudes; his grude is against Saddam. All the people running off at the mouth about oil don't know what they're talking about. Georgie just wants to get the guy who tried to kill his dad.

15,000 is an unusally large amount of soldiers for a normal border excursion. Either they're trying to prevent the Kurds from declaring independence in the event of invasion or (less likely, given the number)intend on annexing Northern Iraq for themselves.

15,000 is actually a modest number for an invasion force especially for a fairly large border area like the Turkey-Iraq border. My guess is they're just making sure the Iraqis and Kurds remember the Turks are there.

I expected a CNN screenshot again, oh well...

As northern Iraq is in fact a disputed area moments over the border now and then is to be expected. They only say after all that some units have actually crossed the border.

Al Gore?

Azazel: Saddam can only wreak limited havoc, unfortunately for Israel they´re within the limits. But only USA have bases all over the world and have the ability to nuke every country on earth if they wanted.

Saddam is a local problem, Bush is a global problem...

Only so long as Saddam has no access to a sailboat or other discrete method of transport, or the ability to give it to someone like al Qaeda who has.

Speaker is third. Dennis Hastert. Fourth is the president of the senate, the most senior member of the majority party. I have no idea who that is now that Strom is gone. After that it's the Cabinet secretaries. So if you want to create America's first black president, all you have to do is kill 4 people at the same time. Kill a few more and you can get the first female president (Gale Norton, sec. of the interior).

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Azazel, only USA has nuked another country. A country that had virtually surrendered I might add. The only reason the US hasn´t nuked anyone else since then is because they know they won´t get away with it this time. MacArthur wanted to nuke China during the Korean War, Truman put a stop to that. Not because he cared about the chinese. But because by this time the Soviets had the bomb and Truman knew that he would be starting WWIII if he nuked China.

According to Faiza Rady of the Al-Ahram Weekly in Cairo (referred HERE ) the US also used biological warfare against the North Koreans and Chinese, dropping germ bombs that spread anthrax, encephalitis and various other diseases.

I also seem to recall reports of neurotoxins being used by the US in the Gulf War.

I don´t want Israel to be nuked (honestly, I don´t) but I don´t want the US to nuke Iraq either. Saddam won´t go away just because the US blast Iraq to smithereens. All they achieve in this is to rally the people around Saddam. Nothing unites a people as much as an common enemy. The US has no right to poke their noses into something that should be the business of the Iraqi people, ie get rid of Saddam Hussein.

Well, Bush had his chance. Him and Cheney vs. Saddam and his VP. He turned it down. Guess mano y mano just doesn't do it for Bush. He needs to press a button.
