How do you save a modem game?? HELP!! Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I had played a direct connect game with a friend over our modems...we saved the game...we tried to resume our game a few days later and there appears to be no way to load our game!!! There must be a way...why would playing by modem even be an option if you can't succesfully save your game to be played later??? Our only other option is play by e-mail and that was too slow!! Alpha Centauri, obviously...takes a looooong time to play so it would be absolutley neccessary to save in a modem game! ARRGHHH!! Please Help! What do we do to recover our game or what do we do if we start over?
