I want to agree with Stew somewhat (for the US at least)

not everything he said, but that Culture effects the youth, and that blacks (in the US at least) have different cultural heroes than whites

I mean whites are bombarded from the media with many role models (from Albert Einstien to Babe Ruth) in a variety of areas while african americans seem to only be bombarded with musicians and sports people (And in reality, few can be those thigns)

the solution I think is for the media to be responsible and show african americans in other fields (like Prof Gates who is big in physics at Maryland) achieving

Maybe I'm in the minority, but in relation to Jon's post, I'd have to say that I don't look at someone's ethnicity when I consider their status as a role model. I'm of Serbian ethnicity, and white, but don't restrict my role models to those factors. I think it's important to teach young people that a role model doesn't have to be someone of the same ethnicity or color or sex as you.

The reason kids get into drug running has nothing to do with gangsta culture. It has everything to do with easy money.

I think the rise in gun crime is directly related to the War on Drugs. The drug prohibition has generated huge revenues for gangs to wage their turf wars in order to protect their consumer base and distribution networks. e.g. In Baltimore, USA recently, a woman filed a complaint against neighborhood drug selling gangsters. The police responded by arresting some people. The gangs retaliated by killing the woman and burning her house down. This collateral damage from the drug war is causing untold amounts of damage to our communities.

the politicians who spout on this crap are just after column inches, the US had the same thing in the mid 90's with NWA, deathrow records etc..that reaction is now looked on as being completely over the top by most sensible people (ie civilization and society didn't crumble because some guy was grabbing his crotch and saying '**** tha police')

Actually, sociologically speaking, Boddingtons isn't completely speaking out of his arse. Using professional sociological terms, minority does not refer to a group that comprises a numerical minority of the population, but one of the groups that does not hold the most power in society.

i understood what he was saying, it's an opinion thats quite popular in the right wing gutterpress (richard littlejohn springs to mind), i just think it's an easy cop out to use it to explain everything from the rise in income tax to the increase in teenage pregnancies!

In Wilmington, DE, there is a shooting about once or twice a week over who controls the drug turf. There was a child accidentally killed in a barber shop shooting last year. This shooting was directly related to gangs protecting and enforcing their drug territory. Almost all of the recent shootings have been due to the drug war; the official drug war and the gangsters perpetrating their own drug war for control of the drug trade.
