The turf wars, the empowerment of the mobs, and the insatiable public demand for alcohol were what brought an end to the original prohibition against alcohol. Probably the reason they call it the War on Drugs and not prohibition is because they are afraid the public will make the connection and call for legalization. :speculation alert:

Most of the violence is by street gangs, which don't make that much money anyway. In fact, if there was plenty of money to be made I'd expect less violence. It's when incomes get tight that the fighting begins.

Oh, ther's a lot of money in car theft too. In the 1970s criminal profits from car theft exceeded that from drugs. At that time cocaine hadn't yet beome popular, heroine was on the decline, and home grown weed was so common that bags sold for less than $20.

Actually I agree 100% with Bods/Infatplayeration.

Mass media portrayal of thug culture has a definite influence on people and encourages the thug life. It was common sense to me but now after meeting some of these guys, they have reinforced my own views.

I have some friends here in LA that used to run in gangs, they've been through it all, drivebys, car chases, tagging (spray painting) buildings. A few of the guys in their gang had actually killed a couple of people.

They told me that after the movie "Colors" came out that the gang violence just exploded. They all said that the music and movies all influenced them to a very heavy degree.

I saw one picture of a 2003 UK gang and they had a sitdown picture taken where they were all emulating the gangs of 1920s Chicago.

This is the stupidest thing America has ever exported. Well, actually it's the second stupidest thing after the Ricki Lake Show.

anyway, yeah most of the problems are by wanna-be's... i mean the real drug dealers cause a whole lot of problems to a community but they generally don't be all guns blazing and **** (it's unprofitable)... there are a whole lot of young boys between 16 and 21 or so, however, who always be acting tough... they do drugs a whole lot, pack gats, form little crews, attack boys from other neighbourhoods, etc. Most of them do come from broken homes or whatever but they really not that tough... but it's kind of easy to pretend to be tough if you got a gat in your hand... it's these fools that usually be shooting and all that nonsense

Hey Speer I agree with you that those kids are coming from broken homes and deep down aren't really that strong. The problem that creates though is that they are always out to prove to everyone how manly they are because they haven't proven they are manly to themselves. That's what makes them so dangerous so when you put a gat in their hands, they are very likely to use it.

Well, you remember back when the gang problem was epidemic, alot of the gangsta rappers started to reverse their message and started to tell people to chill out. They realized the impact they were having on people.

I agree that fixing social problems is one step but musicians should take responsibility for the messages they are sending out because they have a heavy influence on people.
