Dear GodKing,
I'm sorry to be so late in getting back to you, please accept my apologies. It was not the squid catching that took us away from our mailbox for so long, but an unfortunate piling of circumstances. I hope the good news I can bring you will sweeten the sour taste you must have by now.
Meshelic was the past few days, and probably the next few weeks as well, quite busy with that mysterious stuff he calls 'real life'. As a result, I've been appointed as an interim ambassador to your glorious civilization. I hope everything is still well, and that the cow throwing party was a big success (sorry I couldn't make it).
In the mean time, we have thoroughly discussed your request for a minimap trade, and came to the conclusion that it is time for us to step out of the dark, and trade this information with you. We fully recognise that trading will be essential in this game, and if possible would want to meet with you, either on one of our borders, one of yours, or somewhere in the middle. Your people have always seemed to be coming from a trading tradition, so I hope we could honor you by offering this to you first (of course, we'll be offering to trade minimaps to other tribes soon).
As said before, our main goal in this game is to be honorable, if at any time you would suspect us of foul play or hidden agendas, please do not hesitate to contact us. I'm sure we can clear the misunderstanding, or correct any possible mistakes which we unwillingly could make.
Now, the practical side: we'd like to offer you our minimap of 3950 BC, as it should show our position at the settlement of our capital 'Eye of the Storm'. 4000 BC would be unfair, as fewer tiles would be uncovered than when the city hasn't been settled yet. We are still debating whether the current minimap, with all exploration done up to this point, is also available for trade, so for the moment please consider trading the initial minimap. Any ideas from your side on this issue are of course welcome.
Of course, we would like to ask that you keep our minimap secret from any other team, we will do the same with your map.
Further, it might be good to exchange e-mail addresses, so I can send this to you once we agree. Mine is steven_puntje_bex_apestaartje_chello_puntje_be, where '_apestaartje_' is an '@' and '_puntje_' is a '.' .
Last formality: I hereby declare that you are allowed to quote my PMs within the context of this game freely in your forum. (this to avoid any legal disputes with apolyton). Please do the same wrt to your PMs to me, so I can quote them, instead of needing to retype them.
I wish you and your team all the best, and let's hope that with this information we can agree to meet in game soon enough. I really am looking forwards to taste some of those excellent squid meals you're offering

Feel free to quote me as well.
Your proposed trade should be fine. Sorry, don't have much time right now. I will arrange the details with you soon. Thanks.

I cannot make the map, nor do I have a copy of the appropriate save. If someone else can do so....
Thanks. GK

I think, based on this, that we are in the best position.
We are separated from Lux, GoW and ND by Jungle and some mountains. The whole Southern part of the island is ours for the taking. But, we have neighbors, who can assist us to advance technologically faster than those not on our continent.
GS, Lego and Vox appear to be on separate continents than us, and it appears that they may be on one, two or even three separate pieces of land. This will slow their tech growth, and also make it tough to attack us.
The first one to MapMaking will have a great advantage. We have a further edge in that we are closest to GS, and hopefully reach them first and make some trades. Throw in our close relationship with Lego and we are doing great.

I still think we would be foolish to not build the #2 city on the west coast, so that we can build a galley and make contact with Lego asap. With our proximity to GS, the #1 city on the east coast is in a similar situation. All the teams on our continent know the value of the making first contact - we have to take full advantage of our getting Writing first, of these great coastal city sites, and of our relations with GS and Lego in order to get the prize.

Surely they are the most cultured and civilized of all races of men that we have yet encountered, though of course they are much more barbaric still then our own race of men. They certainly soar high above most anyone else in terms of diplomatic etiquette, Neu Demogyptica, surely, Glory of War, definitely, Lux Invicta, unquestionably. However, it seems to me that, unlike us (to whom such graces come naturally), they stress their courteousness, as though it comes not naturally to them, which is not a good thing. It is just as courteous and cultured to say, "Due to current events, I am obliged to tell you that we would like to present you with a small gift" as it is to say, "Due to current events, I am obliged to tell you that we are loathe to seize a portion of your most excellent lands."
We must tread carefully in all things.

A message from DeepO and my response..... I gave him a little free-be in there, but I think it is something they already know. It can hopefully help our relations with them if they think we are free with some of our info.

Dear GodKing,
After comparing our two minimaps, we're happy that we are relatively close. It should be able to meet each other in a reasonable time (a lot depends on whether our nations share the same continent, of course). You indicated before that you might be interested in setting up a meeting spot, does this offer still holds? And if so, do you have some protocol designed for that?
|
What we have done is send one of our exploring warriors to someplace near where the other civ's scout is at. We have typically traded our current mini maps, so it showed where the scouts were. Assuming we are on the same continent, we can arrange something like that. If not, we can either try and find some close land, or we will have to wait til map-making and send a boat.
quote:
We are at this moment discussing options here, and also to something else: Would you be interested to share if, and possibly whom you have contacted in-game yet? Again, this is just exploring options here, we are debating whether we would want it. But, in order to trade, it might proof to be important information to know of your trading partner. |
In game we have met 2 civs. Two others are close enough that we expect to be able to meet up with them soon. Your civ we think is on another continent. OK that was a free-bee.
quote: Do your civizilation have any established ground rules on this? |
Not realy. We do things rather informally. We are not so interested in the beaurocracy, but in just playing the game and having fun doing so. All of our trades must be approved by our leader, Togas. We are acting out our government at each stage. As we are in despotisim, Togas is out despot. When we get to Monarchy, Togas (if still our leader) will be King, with a bunch of Dukes, Counts, & Barrons.
This week at work is a killer for me, so I will not be able to do much in the game until this weekend. Sorry.
Thanks.

Any particular reason we're lying to them? (We've met three civs, and I don't think we'll meet anymore until Map Making.)

Well, I can tell you that we won't immediately be able to find you, at least not as long as we can't use boats. We have met with one other Civ in-game, which most likely you have contacted too.... Vox Controli. They are blocking our access to any further land exploration, and are not very friendly when it comes to negotiating. Our relation has been tense, because of implied aggresiveness from their side, which is doubly problematic as we would like to stay friendly with everyone for a while. We are a trading people... or at least would like to be, if it wasn't for our neighbours.
I assume you have met with them, so maybe you could meet at the spot where they are blocking us. If so, please leave us a note, and I'll send you a map. Otherwise, there is but one possibility, and that is getting to galleys fast.
As to exchanging current minimaps instead of opening maps: we were debating it. Allow me to ask this on our forum again, so that we could get to a fast resolution of this issue. We have a lot of ground explored, so it wouldn't really be in our advantage, but everything is discussable. One thing though, regardless of the outcome, absolute secrecy will be needed when it comes to that kind of information. We won't sell your information, and we would appreciate it if you don't do the same with ours. It's one thing to ask for someone's minimap as part of a trade, it certainly is something else when it comes to our own
All the best,

DeepO;
Vox is the one team we have not met, nor have we been able to open relations with them in any significant way. We have met Lux and GoW. Lego and ... I cannot remember their name (ND?), are close to us and we expect to make contact with both of them soon IIRC.
You are on another continent. We have explored to our south and find an ocean between us. We have heard rumor that Vox is close enough to see, but is separated by water. Only rumor, so we have nothing to confirm with. Another civ is near Vox who is toward your NE we suspect.
We respect the right of secrecy. We are attempting to have good diplomatic relations with all civs. One cannot do that if one is a back stabber, liar, and so forth. Therefore, we regard anything said between civs as confidential. Any trades made between civs are confidential. That is why when asked earlier if we would trade another civs map - I had to answer no. Explicitly stated in the trades is the idea that it was between the two civs, and therefore not an option. The same holds true with your civ. If for example you tell me you have... oh say Code of Laws (love those goodie huts) and are willing to trade it, we will not tell any other civ that you are the one that gave it to us in exchange for Construction. That does not mean that we will not offer to sell it if it is to our advantage to do so, same as you would. But the knowledge of how we acquired said tech is nobodies business but ours. Does this make sense? The same holds true with maps at this stage. However, once we are in the later stages where map trading is possible, we expect world maps to go for lots, and territory maps to be the prime source of trading between civs. We hope to be able to trade territory maps at the appropriate time with most civs, but that is a ways away from now.
Current trades we would like to discuss:
Non aggression pacts: For X number (we have used 50) turns after our civs meet, there will be no aggression between our peoples.
Tech trades. Keep in mind what you have, and what you want. Once our civs meet up is more appropriate time to discuss such trades, but always keep in mind the what’s. I suspect we will try to send a boat (galley) your way soon. Trading current mini maps is a good way we can arrange this as we will know if there are land bridges we can send it across without sinking. We have also explored a lot of land, the most of any other civ that we have traded maps with, with perhaps the exception of Lego (who we traded to first and at that time were about equal to our area).
Wonder Agreements. You build a wonder, and we build another. Even if we don't get our wonder and have to waste the shields, we will not switch to your wonder. You do the same.
- Wonders we are potentially interested in are pyramids & Great Library.
- Wonders we are not interested in are Colossus & Lighthouse.
- The great wall, hanging gardens and oracle we are debating on.
Anything you might wish to trade or discuss. Sorry I have not been able to communicate as much as I would like lately, however that daemon RL keeps popping up. I hope the transition to nye leaving has not seriously effected your team much. Wishing you to come in second place….

dejon - I would expect us to make contact with Lego soon, even if it is via a galley, same with GS and Vox. It is all relative. I was not sure if we had met up with GoW.. or was that ND... I keep getting behind here I am afraid. I know they are on our continent, but just not if we have officially met or not.... my bad.
