TopStyle Pro is the one my co-workers swore by and used at work. I prefer Dreamweaver, but it ain't free.

Dreamweaver is crap, after 3 years of using all versions, I've finally had enough of it's nonsense. Then I remembered when Frontpage first came out and thought it was quite solid and ALWAYS did what I wanted it to. So I checked out the latest version of Frontpage about 3 months ago, and it's brilliant, it does everything dreamweaver can do and at the same time, not screw things up.

I have a Christchurch award for best webdesigner and I have international recognition in web and graphic design (computers). So you can trust me Also, if you do use dreamweaver, DON'T USE LAYERS.

Oh, and forget any type of notepad. I can write a complicated website in notepad too, but it AIN'T gonna make it easier or quicker for me. I don't care how fast you can type, you're just kidding yourself using notepad.

I use Textpad which is similiar to notepad but superior in functionality and I use that for all web coding. Whether it be HTML, JavaScript, ASP, PHP or even Java - good ol' Textpad does the job fine.

Am I kidding myself then? I think not, having base control over all the coding doesn't have to result in slower working and in fact I'm going to have to counter-insult...

I'm sorry but I just can't respect anyone who claims to be a top web developer and actually recommends FrontPage. Jesus Christ, the program has been, is and always will be bloody awful. I'd rather be beaten with sharp sticks then use that pile of crap.

Argh, FrontPage.


*edit put web designer by mistake when I meant web developer - by these teams I mean whereas a web designer is primarily concerned with the design, a developer is the poor sod who has to do all the code - note thats what I do *

i concur.

it also tended to distort my code (especially with tables).

i use photoshop / imageready for the graphics / imagemaps, and straight up html / php in visual studio.

i've heard decent things about dreamweaver.

FrontPage? No thanks. It just adds all sorts of MS-only extensions, so you'll need more time to go through the whole thing by hand and zap those.

I'd say use a text editor, say Notetab or Archnophilia. I have HotDog and it's nice, but it costs money.

I don't care about Dreamweaver either. By now your website should be almost plain HTML with all the layout work handled by CSS. Shouldn't even try to use tables to do your layout anymore.

Dude, Dreamweaver rocks. Split mode I can code and watch the design at the same time. Plus it's easily configurable, doesn't add extrenious code like Frontpage does, and doesn't mess with my code unless I tell it do so. It is the main HTML generator used.

Yeah, I could do it all by hand in TopStyle or Notepad, but Dreamweaver does it so much faster.

I hated Frontpage when it first came out. Unlike most MS products, it was not intuitive, it was hard to figure out what did what. I gave it up immediately. I also tossed Dreamweaver 1, but Dreamweaver 3 was wonderful. In between I used Homesite, but that's being folded into Dreamweaver now.

I also like gvim.

It doesn't bother me. Aeons ago when we needed to struggle with tables to get the layout right, it's imperative to have something like Dreamweaver. But now the coding is pretty light, and I can just have an external browser window open.

Dreamwiork IS free if you know where to get it but it's crap.

Too complicated, cant even get it to do what you want unless you spend hours upon hours just to find out how its supposed to do what you want it to.


Cool page OTOH is brilliant.

In 1 hour you can design a web page without knowing anything about web designing. And you spend your time designing instead of trying to figure out how it works.

Unfortunately after the trial period expires, you have a nasty suprise waiting for you...

It's NOT like the manual says...

Whenever you click on something on the web page you made with cool page, you get a window poping up which says you should register and it doesnt go away unless you press ok. and that happens to whoever visits your site.

This happens after the registration period has expired and you did an alteration on the page.

I almost broke my PC about this

I didnt know a thing about web designing and i made the page you see in my profile....

(the original pages had black background, dont know why it now changed to white...????) but i cant go and rectify it because then it will start poping up the windows

Learn HTML, which is very easy, and then do the changes yourself.
