I hate SUVs generally. The vast majority are unnecessary, and they are free-riding on both safety and mileage standards that cars have to face. They waste fuel, create more air pollution, and kill those who are "doing the right thing" by driving smaller cars. We see them in the ditches, in the canyons, and in the medians constantly here in Colorado. There are people who do need them here. One of my friends lives at 8800 feet, about 1/2 a mile from the nearest paved road. Even with a good SUV (not one of those toys that have become the majority these days) he is usually unable to get to his house for two months of the year. These sorts of people make up about 1% of the total SUV ownership however.
I wish there weren't so many stupid turds out there who respond so well to advertising. The solution I see is to bring light trucks back into the loving arms of government regulation. Mileage standards and safety standards should match those of passenger cars. Vehicles that don't should pay a stiff tax to pay for the air pollution, excessive oil imports, death and destruction they bring to our roads.
