Peter Gammons, in his January pre-pre-season predictions states that the Cubs AND White Sox as two teams that 'are a lot better than we're thinking right now'. Could Chicago fans have a good baseball season for once?

Sox can do well but no one in Chicago seems to care. The Cubs have to deal with both the Astros and the Cards once again. The Reds aren't doing too bad either.

IIRC:
The last White Sox appearance = 1959 vs. Dodgers
The last Cub appearance = in the series where Ruth supposedly "called his shot."
They're certainly due.

The Cubs have some great pitching, Chris... it is all they have (no offense) .

Estes
Clement
Cruz (who will have a breakout year)
Zambrano
etc.

edit: Leiber's option was denied... and Estes and Clement added to the list.

But the Cubs still have a serious problem in the bull pen.

As long as they continue to blow games in the late innings, they won't be able to compete for anything. sigh....

A Chicago baseball team making it to the World Series: surely one of the early signs of the Apocalypse.

Though it would be nice, if the Cubbies make it (heck, even the Sox's) when on TV they show some grizzled, ancient man who just happens to, as a little kid, have been to the last time either of these teams won. Hmm, I wonder what president Roosevelt (T) looked throwing the first pitch of the 1908 Classic: or did President not do that sort of thing, way back then?...

Ming nailed it Imran, look at the Braves, the Bullpen (or lack thereof) cost them a few shots at a championship.

Starters aern't enough, you need middle guys, and a halfway decent closer.

Do remember, Ming and Chris:

The Cubs this offseason signed Mike Remlinger, who was the best bullpen man in Atlanta, and Dave Veres, who was the set up man in St. Louis. Add that to Zambrano and Gordon and I think their bullpen will be fine this year .

As far as the Cubs Bull Pen... Gordon has to prove he is healthy and can still do the job, or there is no true closer. The Cubs blew WAY TOO MANY games last year in the 8 and 9th inning.

True Ming, but Veres can close. He was St. Louis' closer before Isringhausen got there. He did a decent job IIRC (I had him on my fantasy team that year, I think). You'll LOVE Remlinger, btw.

Oh, GePap, Coolidge was the first to throw out the first pitch at a World Series too. Taft threw out his pitches on Opening Day. Taft was a HUGE baseball fan (in more ways than one ).

And Nixon was the first to throw out a pitch at a nighttime All Star Game. Reagan was the first to actually SIT in a dugout during a game, and then later was the first to call play-by-play in a half-inning while President .

The last time the Cubs won a World Series was in 1906. The last time the Sox won was 1959. I haven't noticed either team making many major trades so far this off season. Good luck.

The White Sox won only two games: Game 1: 11-0 & Game 5: 1-0.

The L.A. Dodgers won the other four, with relief pitcher Larry Sherry getting two of the wins and saving the other two. Future legends Sandy Koufax and Maury Wills were both on the roster, but I don't believe either played.

Well, everyone and their mother was screaming that at Selig back when the whole tie game fiasco happened, but kudos to Beer for doing the right thing. Maybe now the players will treat the All-Star Game with a little decency, let alone importance.
