One to One league: Rules
1. All rules defined in this post may be waved or changed if both players explicitly agree on it.
2. Games will use unmodded PTW with the latest patch (currently 1.21f. Solution for European version available).
3. Cheats are not allowed in the 1T1 league whether named below or not. If in doubt whether a certain action is regarded a cheat, ask your current opponent whether he regards it as such. If so, let one of you post the supposed cheat in this thread to suggest to make it a named cheat.
Named cheats are:
- Unloading armies
- Rush buying cheat (rush buy and then change the item build)
4. The settings below will be used in the 1T1 league unless both players agree upon changing the settings.
Timer: None
Mode: Simultaneous moves at the start but must be changed to Turn based if one of the players asks for it.
Barbarians: Sedentary
Map size: Small
AI players: None
Victory conditions: Default settings
Others: Random

Current playing scheme
The playing scheme did not work. Some players enlist but do not play games and this ruined this approach. Just contact me by private message and I will get you started asap.

Not all of us may have the same reasons for taking part in the One to One league but my reasons to start the league are stated below.
From my experience with CTP multiplaying I know it is difficult (not impossible, just difficult) to finish games with more than two players. The simple reason is that it is hard to find the dates and times to all get together for the number of sessions that are needed to finish a game. Often (almost always in fact) games with more than two players stalled before they finished. It is one of the reasons why I like one to one games a lot.
It is not always easy to find reliable (= willing to finish games, not cheating) opponents. Especially for PTW it is currently hard to find any opponents at all.
The lagginess of PTW makes it hard to play with many players. Players must be on the same continent, have cable etc.
Finally many of us like to have a feeling for their own skills compared to those of other players.
Because of the above reasons I started the one to one PTW league here on Apolyton. The first games started in december 2002. Since there are not to many players yet we do not make things to complicated. Participants starting a game post here and they post the result after finishing the game. A winner gets one point and we (I to start with) keep score of the number of games played and the number of points of each player that participates. Definitly not the best scoring system one can think of but an easy one to start with.
This way we found reliable opponents, finish games, deal with the lagginess of PTW and get an idea about the skills of ourselves.
Since we only started with the four of us we decided to set up a playing scheme where we all play at least once against all others. When more people get in this may have to be changed but for the time being this seems to work fine.

Hi Keygen. Welcome to our league. I added your name to the rankings and will add your name to the playing scheme as soon as you have the time to play. Just let me know. Great to have you on board.
My first (finished) game took less than an hour but that was because Tom was really unlucky. The other games (played before the league started) were finished in somewhere between 6 - 10 playing hours (so several sessions). I guess that is a more realistic number for the average duration of a game. Even in those games we did not yet get into the modern times so in case of nice balanced starting positions etc. a game may take a lot longer.

Bigfree1. You are welcome in principle. There is one thing though. If I am right, Acampo is in California which means our ping may be quite low. All of the current players are from Europe and you may therefore be in for laggy games until a new patch surfaces that solves this irritating problem. If you are sure about this we could try one time to see how good/bad it is. PM or e-mail me to define a time to experiment.

Hi !
I havn't played CivIII multiplayer yet, but now that I see there are actual tourneys I might try :-). One question: Why do you play without time limit ? I for once are a very slow player and would imagine my opponent would get bored.

Welcome Saph0. I added your name to playing scheme. Have fun.
If you do realize yourself that you are a slow player it may not be that bad. LOL. Seriously.....There are times that we all want to think things over for a while. A time limit ruins that. IMO Civilization is not a game to play with a time limit. Having said that we do assume that we can play a turn now and then so do not make it too slow if you want people to play against you again.

It is never to late to take part in the fun so you are welcome Dave. I added you to the player list. Unfortunately there are people that enlist but never play a game so the playing scheme does not really work and I took it out. All of the regular players involved in one or more games at the moment. This means it may be difficult to find your first opponent. Just let me know your e-mail address (e.g. by private message) and we will get you started.

I still see people trying to find opponents. Enlist here and I will try to arrange a game for you. If you are interested in one to one games that is.
