I don't know if you have seen the clip for this but "our Pete" practically tries to touch up a few young tough boys playing pool.

I've always suspected he was a kiddy fiddler since I first saw that flim clip about 25 years ago.

Cased closed I'd say - that fact he used his credit card to access the site is pretty damning evidence that this was more than just idle curiosity.

Some years ago Townshend did an interview in which he claimed that the song Rough Boys was autobiographical, which led to some speculation that he was homosexual. Later he claimed that he had been misundersood.

I don't really know what to think about this, but I do know the man is innocent until proven guilty. I hope it turns out that he really was doing research, as I'd hate to see one of the greatest rockers of all time go to jail for being a sexual deviant...

I somehow wonder if that isn't really going to help a child deal with sexual abuse, especially when the vast majority of cases involve someone who is close to (or in) the family. Of course the way this particular pathology seems to run, there is a decent chance that today's victim is tomorrow's victimizer. It seems to be the case with Townsend, if "Uncle Ernie" is any indication.

As for the porn, if I could be sure that people who are excited by this sort of thing would limit themselves to only viewing images and not molesting children, then I would be content to let it alone (viewing the images that is, making them is hideous abuse). But we can't be sure of that, in fact the porn may actually cause more second hand abuse by feeding the sickness.

At this point I don't think we know very much except that he used a credit card to access child pornography, nothing for certain about the Why. By his own admission, he did it because he wanted to see "what was out there." So perhaps he honestly didn't know what he was about to see. Heck, it could've been 16-year olds dressed up like little boys and girls for all he knew (16 being the legal age in the UK). There are affirmative defenses for possession of child pornography. It's not black and white. If he had been found to be actually manufacturing the stuff, I would obviously not be Mr. Nice-Guy right now. If the police find he has accessed child porn before, that would certainly negate the "I didn't know" defense.

Furthermore:
Should a person found with a few rocks of crack cocaine receive a harsh prison sentence? Many people say, "No, he should receive treatment instead." I happen to agree. I also think that a person caught downloading child pornography a single time (as far as we can determine) should be treated similarly. Townshend believes he was sexually molested as a child. For that reason alone, he needs to be treated.

If Townsend is really the sick puppy people here would like to think he is, then one would expect to find quite a bit of child porn around. It's highly unlikely that a man of his age would suddenly develop an interest in child porn, so there should be a lot more evidence lying around.

He shouldn't even be punished in any way, but I believe drugs should be legal. Child porn is another matter, it should be illegal and by funding it, he helps create the demand.
