Airbags and Seatbelts Don't Make You Safer Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

They simply make you take more risks. Their advent has probably caused driving to worsen.

Disagree?

Well then, consider this. Do you think you'd drive as you usually do, or safer, if you had a dagger sticking at you from the centre of your steering wheel?

Thus airbags and seatbelts make people take bigger risks.

Discuss.

Can you show any correlation between increased safety measures and reckless driving, and if so can you show a causal link?

But you would stab yourself as you accelerate! laws of motion: your body will try to remain at rest as the knife is apporaching you!

I would drive from the passenger side. and extend my left foot over to the gas pedal.

I held out for a long time. I cited those examples where people died that might have been saved if they hadn't been wearing seatbelts, and refused to use a seatbelt. (in fact, the first car I owned didn't even have seatbelts)

Then when my daughter got old enough to talk, since she wasn't allowed to ride in the car without a seat belt on, she started asking why I didn't wear one. I figured it was easier to start using it then dealing with her question. I've used one ever since.

AND I can honestly say that it has had absolutely NO effect on the way I drive. I still drive the exact same way that I have for the last 30 years. (it does change a bit depending on the abilities of the car I'm driving, but that has nothing to do with the seatbelt.)

And I've no experience with an airbag going off in my face so I don't see how that could impact my driving tendencies.

So as always, I think your statement is BS.

The other option is to push the pedals with your hands, and steer with your legs so that the knife goes between your legs. For vision you could either have a periscope, or a friend on the other seat could tell you which way to go.

You know, I think we just destroyed Stews argument about safe driving.

I think there is an impact from this. But I think that net/net you are better off with them there. I already know that there are plenty of dangers out there. And I've had accidents before. So the seat belt doesn't have that much of an effect to make me more dangerous. But it will help me if something happends out of the blue (expecially something where my actions are irrelevant...like the other idiot hitting me.)

WRT the dagger example. Yes, I would drive more carefully with that dagger there. But would I BE safer? NO! The net/net would be to make me less safe.

If you think that by having an airbag, you've become immortal and do foolish stunts, then no, they don't make you safer.

What has the greatest net effect on making you safer is good maintenance of your car and of the road system. Driving with worn tyres, or without break lights is just calling for trouble.
