Just began listening to Definitely Maybe by Oasis again (I always choose a CD at random to take with me when I go somewhere for a few days).

That hasn't lasted. I was hoping to avoid all the crappy early nineties "grunge" bands.

There are at least 20 more influential bands than Nirvana since 1985.

And the worst part...no Bez wannabes.

Lasted as in still occasionally played on the radio? Smells like teen spirit, Come as you are, Alive, Black, Jeremy, Black hole sun, One. Grunge rules.

Lasted as in still listening to it? Actually, a lot of my favourite bands are from the early 90's (or did great albums then): Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Therapy?, Kyuss, Bad Religion, Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins (well, occasionally), Radiohead, Tool, Live (Throwing copper at least).

And name some of those bands, Stew. I can name only few that came even close to Nirvana in terms of influence.

Well I can't name all twenty as I wasn't in my musical prime right then (listening to Eternal ).

Smiths, Fugazi, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Rites of Spring, Bad Religion, and I suppose I will have to say Prodigy, oakenfold and a couple of the rap bands (NWA??, cos I know nowt about rap).

For a lot of those bands you mentioned it's very questionable if they were more influential than Nirvana. I'll grant you that NWA, Bad Religion and probably the Stone Roses (I'm not too familiar with the Smiths or Rites of Spring, I'm afraid) are roughly as influential as Nevermind. But come on, Smash is early Bad Religion revisited. Fugazi are original, but influential? I don't think so. I don't consider the Prodigy as a particular influential band either. For better or for worse, Nirvana brought (semi-)underground rock back in the mainstream and inspired enormous amounts of bands in the 90's (some good, some not so good), IMO to an extent that only few bands come even close to.

Something that makes comparison hard as well is the fact that many of the british bands you mentioned hardly made an impact out of Britain while being big over there, and Nirvana and grunge in general not being quite as big in Britain.

Nirvana was massive in Britain. Biggest band around at the time. Boddies is a bit too young to appreciate the impact they had when Smells Like Teen Spirit came out. I was 15 at the time, just going out to parties and clubs and things. You can't underestimate the effect they had. They had a number 7 single here. Album still sells well now. The greatest hits album was a hit last year.

They were much bigger and more influential than The Stone Roses or Oasis ever were. In the country as a whole. Manchester was probably a little different.

None whatsoever. The nineties were the weakest decade of music since like the forties, consisting mostly of unlistenable, predictable bollocks. And since music now is so much better, there really is no point in revisting older embarassments.

I hate all indie, especially Madchester. Anyway, it was basically over as a creative centre by 1990, with only Oasis (one decent album, in 1997, the rest crap) at the helm.
