Well if you could see your partner it would be a factor but we only play the first turn so that you can make sure you're not on a 1 square island, or that you have, a grain resource, etc. Part of the complexity will be the randomness of the game start. If you think its a water world you might focus research on map reading, but its possible that techs leading to horsemen would be better. Expansionist civs may have a big advantage on a pangea but not on a water world.
