Standard is fine with me. I will go with whatever everyone else wants for climate and temperature. I do not want age 3 billion (I hate the idea of being stuck on an island consisting of 50 mountain tiles). I would prefer a continents map but again will go with the majority.

Here I am...thanks for the PM SpencerH. I suppose we are forging ahead with or without Trickey.

I think the map size should be standard or smaller. The climate and temperature....I don't care. Please make the map 4 or 5 billions years old.

The 3 game start if fine.

My time zone is -6 GMT.

What else....

Are we playing accelerated production. In my other PBEM game, we tried accel. production, but it was accidently turned off early in the game. I'm fine with accel. prod., but there must be very clear instructions on how to open the game and what to check before proceding with your turn. If turns aren't opened and saved just right, lots of problems ensue.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

We need to recruit a moderator. Someone who is copied on all turns. Someone who can play for a player temporarily (vacations, RL issues, etc.). The moderator also helps when there are problems (since they are not part of the game).

Do you think we need a moderator?

I dont have a mod in any of my other games so I'm unsure of whether its necessary or not. I think it would slow things down and I'm sure we can find someone to fill in for vacations and to arbitrate disputes.

I would like to wait for trickey but how long should we wait?

If we decide to go without him I'm willing to get the ball rolling since I've done it before.

So far we have the play rotation set, the civs we want, standard map, normal everything else (yes/no). Maybe someone wants to delineate the known PBEM cheats and glitches and how to avoid them.

I don't like the idea of a moderator. It will slow things down (as was mentioned) and I think we should be able to trust each other. Anyone who cheats just ruins the game for themselves.
I would like to wait for Trickey but it doesn't seem like he's around. If he doesn't show up in a few days I guess we should join Spencer's game. Did anybody PM Trickey? Perhaps an e-mail would be better?

I don't really see a need for a moderator.

I am not keen on accelerated production simply because I have never played with it on. However, I will go with the majority. If we are playing with accelerated prod. it could be a bit of a bloodbath so a pangaea map might be best in that case.

It is going to take a while in any case so I don't mind the game hanging for a few days if someone is away.

The main PBEM bug to avoid is not finishing your turn. You must finish your turn before sending it to the next player. If you receive a turn that has not been finished, don't play it out because the previous player apparently gets two turns of production if you do. I tend to play all my PBEM games through the multiplayer screen to ensure things like accelerated production are not turned on (or off) accidentally.

I would not limit out-of-game negotiations or deals done by e-mail. Trading mini-maps can help early contact. It is better not to have out-of-game deals apart from that until the players concerned have made contact in the game. That is the only restriction that makes sense and really helps the game play. Is everyone happy with that?

I'm surprised you use the MP screen. There was a few games that started long before mine that bogged down over errors while we forged ahead using the load game from the main screen.

I dont like accelerated production since it turns into a crappy wargame so I dont play those games.

I agree no trading/deals until contact in the game.

You must be careful when loading. Here's what happened to me. I was playing my own game, and I decided to play a PBEM turn. I loaded the PBEM game from the pull down screen (not from the start screen). It opened fine, but the game thought I was the previous player. I closed the game quickly, but not before I saw more than I needed too.

From then on, I very carefull....probably too careful, but it's worth the effort.

We don't need a moderator, it's a luxary. The moderator does not prevent cheating. Moderator gets the ball rolling, holds the admin. password, plays for players on vacation, helps to fix error that may come about.

In any case, we don't have to have a moderator.

I'm gonna start a new game on another thread. They can fill up fast on the main thread so I'll ask if you want to join first.

Random civs
Normal map
random map characteristics and barbs
rate three games and we choose the best average start for everyone
6 human civs, no AI civs
no accelerated production

I'm toying with the idea of 3 teams of 2 civs

I'm in one game where everyone is committed and it's great. The others have died (although one appears resurrected).

Count me in

I would just like to have another game running.

I am co-operating informally with someone in one of my games which is interesting, and working quite well, so playing in teams of two would be different.

Suggest you start a thread for a new game and let's get on with this.

Anatolia is away for a few days but I think he is likely to want to play.

I have a few more hours before I leave. Please count me in but, as Cerberus said, I will be away until the 12th (the 11th for you North Americans). I don't want to slow down the start of the game so I'd like to ask Cerberus to score my starts and play my first turn or two.

Anatolia

P.S. Thanks, Cerberus, for mentioning in your post my intention to play. The Internet wasn't working most of the day but returned to normal this evening.

Cheers

Suffering from ads?

Great to hear from you Anatolia I was hoping you were stil around since its not the fifth (or maybe it is in Korea). We need more newfies in the game. What do you think of the team idea? I'm pretty sure Imtoops will play. Then I'll set up the thread and we'll get a couple more players. If we can get them quickly enough I'll set up the games and you'll have a chance to score them. If you post here when you're about to leave it would be handy to know.

OK I've started the thread to get a another player http://apolyton.net/forums/showthre...&threadid=76114

I've added this change that I think will change the strategy of the game.

No tech trading between teams (please comment)

I think it may be an interesting variant requiring flexible thinkers. Those who are lucky or skilled enough to find their partner will have an advantage. There may be combinations of builders with warmongers etc but this will require teamwork to win (I think).

I guess I don't understand. I read your post several times and still don't have a clue.

No Trading between TEAMS.
I guess you mean between civs? But later you say the advantage goes to those who find their PARTNER. So do we have partners? Can partners trade?

OK, I misssing something and am totally clueless.

The idea is six players with six civs in three teams of two. You can trade techs with your team mate but not with the others. So the quicker you contact your team mate and co-ordinate your research the better you will do on tech.

CerberusIV has it right. You'll be paired up with another player (at random). Once you have contact with that player you can communicate and coordinate your research, warfare, etc. Those teams that make contact first and co-ordinate their effort best will have an advantage.

What you cant do is trade techs to civs that are not your partner. The details of this are up for discussion in the new thread.

Ahhh, a ray of understand desends upon my balding head.

I'm all for the concept. I also agree with trading within partners only.

With my new understanding, I see how choosing the best (out of 3) starts is very important. If I'm close to my partner, it's a good start.

It all sounds good to me.
