Standard is fine with me. I will go with whatever everyone else wants for climate and temperature. I do not want age 3 billion (I hate the idea of being stuck on an island consisting of 50 mountain tiles). I would prefer a continents map but again will go with the majority.

I don't really see a need for a moderator.
I am not keen on accelerated production simply because I have never played with it on. However, I will go with the majority. If we are playing with accelerated prod. it could be a bit of a bloodbath so a pangaea map might be best in that case.
It is going to take a while in any case so I don't mind the game hanging for a few days if someone is away.
The main PBEM bug to avoid is not finishing your turn. You must finish your turn before sending it to the next player. If you receive a turn that has not been finished, don't play it out because the previous player apparently gets two turns of production if you do. I tend to play all my PBEM games through the multiplayer screen to ensure things like accelerated production are not turned on (or off) accidentally.
I would not limit out-of-game negotiations or deals done by e-mail. Trading mini-maps can help early contact. It is better not to have out-of-game deals apart from that until the players concerned have made contact in the game. That is the only restriction that makes sense and really helps the game play. Is everyone happy with that?

You must be careful when loading. Here's what happened to me. I was playing my own game, and I decided to play a PBEM turn. I loaded the PBEM game from the pull down screen (not from the start screen). It opened fine, but the game thought I was the previous player. I closed the game quickly, but not before I saw more than I needed too.
From then on, I very carefull....probably too careful, but it's worth the effort.
We don't need a moderator, it's a luxary. The moderator does not prevent cheating. Moderator gets the ball rolling, holds the admin. password, plays for players on vacation, helps to fix error that may come about.
In any case, we don't have to have a moderator.

The idea is six players with six civs in three teams of two. You can trade techs with your team mate but not with the others. So the quicker you contact your team mate and co-ordinate your research the better you will do on tech.
