I've worked with some of the Los Alamos scientists who did research on those isotope heat sources. They go to some real extremes to try to make sure that if the heat source ever reenters the atmosphere it will stay intact and thus not be a widespread danger.

The coolest part was looking at a round ball of Plutonium about the size of a shotput. It was like a hundred pounds and was glowing red hot. Pure evil baby. In a glove box, thank God.

What a waste of money!

If we ever want to be able to properly explore space, we need to understand fundamental science better, and that means more money should be spent on particle physics experiments.

Particle physics research is the only way - we will not get into proper space exploration with this sort of junk.
