I always wondered. when people say cianide, what kind of compound do they mean, exactly? is it Hidrogen Cyianide HCN? or is it something else? in chemistry, cianide means that ti contains a -CN ending.

Whether due to academic shortcomings or differing international terminology I don't follow you. What is 'ti'?

Ah right, I get you. Um... as far as I know it has to have the -CN group like you say to be considered cyanogenic but mostly when people speak of cyanide they are talking about hydrogen cyanide.

In what way is Cyanide poisonous anyway? Is it a catalitic poison like lead?

Cyanide attaches to certain enzymes, preventing cellular respiration and thus denying oxygen to your vital organs.

I'm not entirely sure, but vitamin B-12, cyanocobalamin, is intimately tied into cellular metabolism, and includes a -CN group. Chances are that other -CN compounds find their way into the position B-12 usually occupies, and blocks things up. The fact that just about every cyanide compound I can think of (Except B-12) is toxic seems to support this.

Apple pips contain prunasin(?), which reacts to form cyanide H-CN when digested.
