Dateline Karakas: Death penalty re-instated, crackdown on extremist groups Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

After a double homicide that shocked the nation, the Karakas Assembly decided to re-instate the death penalty for capital murder cases. The move has already caused controversy among local opponents of capital punishment.

On hearing that the neo-Nazi group "White September" was planning a rally at the Rose Tower at the heart of the City of Karakas, the Assembly passed a resolution forbidding the march from taking place. Capital Militia and military police will be deployed to inforce the injunction. As of noon tomorrow, White September will be officially outlawed from Karakas, and being a member of this organization can incur a minimum penalty of one year in jail. Senator Siti Nurhaliza Abdul Rahman has proposed a list of other extremist groups to be outlawed, which is currently under review by the Assembly.

EDIT:

Note from the President:

Karakas feels very strongly about racist groups and symbols. Since our independence in 1983, successive administrations have done all they can to ensure that racist ideology does not take over national discourse. The idea that the Rose Tower, the palace of the medieval kings of Karakas and a poignant symbol of independence from the Numenorean kings beyond the sea, could be co-opted by the cause of fascism, is unthinkable to the people of Karakas.

the Dark Valley supports these moves by Karakas to crack down on extremism.

We, however urge you to rethink your economical policies, and give an equal opportunity to all the children of Karakas. It's not the children's fault that they are born to poor parents, and they should be educated like everyone else.

Centralis praises the strong action taken by it's neighbours against extremist subversion; we have taken similar action against Neo-Nazi groups, and although we officially decided not to reintroduce the death penalty, we can sympathise with others who may choose otherwise.

Karakas, may we suggest that instead of prohibition, which may only make such groups seem more "trendy" because of the forbidden factor, that you allow such rallies, etc, but focus on the education of your populace. The groups need not be illegal, but if they're still looked down and frowned upon anyway, it makes no real difference.

Though when it comes to the bloody Animal Liberation Front (Bloody for killing guardmen that is), or anyone else who goes beyond words and actually starts to harm others physically or materially, then as far as I'm concerned......give them a taste of their own medicine.

While we cannot speak for Karakas, we in Centralis believe that it is preferable to combine the banning of extremist groups with the education of the people about the real goals of such groups; and remember, in Centralis, groups are only banned if they begin advocating and committing, as the Nazis did, actual, racist violence. We had some problems with the white supremacist group 'Centralis for the Centralians', who, in addition to the usual Holocaust denial and racist rhetoric, advocated, and carried out, attacks of Jews and other minorities, particularly Centralis' indigenous tribes. After a case was assembled against the group, new legislation was passed and the High Court ordered the group disbanded and it's members were given 5 years prison; those actually involved in the violence recieved sentences from 15 years to life.

I wouldn't go so far as to ban them under any circumstances, just because of that forbidden fruit factor, though I can certainly see where you're coming from with the issues that happened in Centralis.
