Yeah, that's not hard to guess. Afrikaans is just regular Dutch only with loads and loads of typos
90% of Afrikaans can be understood by Dutch people without too much effort (in this case 'regtig' comes from the German/Medieval Dutch word 'richtig' which means the same thing).

quote:
You said I sound Flemish, why? How is the spelling or grammar different? (Excuse my ignorance)

Flemish is officially identical to Dutch, but Flemish people formulate their sentences a little more... cumbersome, roundabout ('woorden gebruiken' instead of 'spreken') and it's a bit more formal (you used 'u' instead of 'jullie', Dutch people are rude and only use 'u' if it's absolutely necessary ). Also, you used 'erkent' where you meant to say 'herkent' (erkennen = recognize as in acknowledge, herkennen = recognize as in identify), which would be a typical Flemish mistake as they tend to use the French silent h sometimes in spoken language. Finally, the Flemish usage of words is sometimes slightly differently from Dutch, which could theoretically apply to 'erkennen' as well, though I doubt it actually does.

Flemish is a bit more poetic, I suppose (which probably explains why there are far more native-speaking Flemish poets/song-writers/singers/etc than Dutch ones ), while Dutch is more to the point. A Dutch person would have simply said 'Dan zal ik een taal spreken die jullie ook niet kennen.'

But that's probably a lot more than you wanted to know

Bah! I wanna go to Brazil too!

There are problably less than half a dozen people on all of Apolyton can actually make sense of that, but I think I get the stretch of it I guess Frisian and Twents are not all *that* dissimilar

How come we can speak Finnish and not French? Isn't it equally forbidden by the rules?

The first sentence is perfect but I don't understand what you mean with the second one. Is it "it's not fair"? In this case you should write : "ce n'est pas juste or (if you want to give it a childish touch) "c'est pas juste!".

Almost Frisian and Twents (Twente is the region, Twents the language) are dialects in the Netherlands. They're not dialects of the Dutch language. Of course, over the course of the past dozen or so centuries, Dutch had a huge impact on both dialects, but they're not Dutch in origin. Twents is a Lower Saxon (= ~German) dialect and if I'm not mistaken Frisian is a language in it's own, not a dialect of any other language (though Scandinavian languages come closest). In fact, English has strong Frisian influences, stronger than most other Germanic influences. So if anything, English is actually a dialect of Frisian

There is a 'grandfather' rule. In the OT the Finns had their own language thread. When the new rule about languages came into effect they were specifically exempted so as not to close down the suomithreadi.

Thanks for the explanation Locutus, it reminds me of the time two languages were in use in France, the Oc tongue (in southern France) and the Oil tongue (in Northern France). I remember the old persons talked what we named the Patois when I was young, it's now called the Occitan and is almost no more in use.

The Patois was different from region to region and a whole part of France is still called the Occitanie (Toulouse is a part of it and one of its emblems is the Occitan Cross) while a neighbouring one is named the Languedoc which can be translated as Oc Tongue.

quote:

Here is the Occitan Cross:
