The alternative to the emails is to use 'my threads'. Like you I use emails, but many people prefer the 'my threads' feature.

I use that one too, but I prefer to have some mail arriving when there's a reply, so I don't have to look at "my threads" all the time...

No, not the list of subscribed threads in the control panel, but the 'my threads' feature which can be accessed by clicking the link 4 to the right of the control panel.
