I'm thinking now that some of the hesititation expressed by...some here about dealing with Iraq is because you simply may be too young to actually remember the Gulf War.
I tend to forget that not all of you are ancients, like Ming and RAH.

So do you remember?
Do you remember oil fields on fire?
How about Israel withstanding scud missle attacks, and standing fast ?
How about veterans who served who are now experiencing what may be symptoms caused by gases ?

Just curious is all.

I remember there being a good reason for war.

I don't remember the huge casualties of the Iraqis (100000), it wasn't reported.

i remember iraq actually provoking war by invading kuwait, not geroge bush provoking war by invading iraq.

Given that all the estimates, short of the very early reports, put this figure at or under 35,000, there's probably a good reason for that. Like it's wrong.

Yes, I remember the first gulf war. I remember the greenish pictures of nightly Baghdad on CNN, and I remember Israel being attacked by Scud missiles. Those were the days, when wars in Iraq still were justified, extension or not.

Actually I remember the war getting some significant discomfort. It was not popular until after we won. 44 Democrat Senators voted to forbid Bush Sr. from prosecuting the war. That was the support they gave the CiC after he made his case.

yes I remember it. I was 6, and we all came into a single room in the appartment, where all the doors and the windows were "sealed". I wore a gasmask, with a battery powered filtered-air supply engine. I remember I used to turn the engine off a lot.

This war will be a continuation of the earlier one. He has not abided by the agreement we signed with him. We have been skirmishing with him all through the 90's.

Here's a non-early report which gives Iraqi casualties at 85,000, so not 'all' the estimates give at or under 35,000.

It's not a great source, I'll admit. Some estimates, however, give Iraqi casualties in the low thousands.

Hmm. That site lists wounded and killed. I was reffering to only killed, so I'll recant my statement that there they list at most 35,000 casualties. The death toll is 35,000 or less.

I remember the Gulf War. My favorite band, Queen, reached #1 in the charts with their 6-minute long Bolero-inspired magnum opus called Innuendo, which combined a masterful blended musical style of military march, folk dance, orchestral majesty, and hard rock. Within months, Freddie Mercury was dead of AIDS and had become a figurehead for AIDS awareness, recognized from Britain to Berlin, Moscow to Tokyo.

Oh yeah - and America fought and won a war too. I think there was a lot of patriotism and rhetoric about that but it was hard to tell because I was in the UK at that time. All I knew for sure was that the news channels didn't seem to know crap about the war - they just showed glossy computer graphics and a few vague green-saturated images of tank shells flying off into the distance. Later, it was revealed that the Western press had been forbidden from entering Iraq without specific army approval.

They say that the power of the press was instrumental in stopping the war in Vietnam.

Looks like the American leadership learns quickly.

The death toll figure ranges from extremely high figures of 200,000 to extremely low figures of just 3000. I have to admit that the lower figures have slightly more argument behind them, so I've been swayed downwards during the debate. It'll be a long time before we find out the truth, however.

I had just entered high school at the time (I was in 9th grade). I'm not ancient like Ming or Rah but I'm not a young pup like some of you.

BTW I remember it very well & living in a military town it was a very big deal.

We were in Russia back then and had the tickets for Israel exactly for the date of the beginning of the war. Obviously we postponed the flight when things got serious.

For me, being 5 years old, it meant one thing. My 6th birthday will be celebrated in Russia, but my sister's 4th birthday already in Israel. That was so unfair.
It took a few days of endless crying for me to accept the harsh reality.

I'm in 9th grade and we get Channel1 now, Oba. Good God, they're stupid. Why anyone hoping to have a decent career in journalism would become a Channel1 reporter is beyond me.

The commercials are massively irritating as well.
