Intersite DG - Game Set-up Discussion Full PM-box? Change here!

Hello folks. First my apologies to the Demo game forum and members for using this space for intersite demo game discussions. Thank-you for your patience, President Aro. We expect to have a closed forum shortly and we can take most of these discussions, and threads, there.

Thirty-nine Apolytonians have joined the crusade!

If you had your name down in one of the threads, but have not joined the official team 'group', please click on the team name at the top of the forum board and join up.

It looks like the German team will be in - that gives us 6. And the counter.

Regarding spying and the like, all teams have come out against it, and Arnelos' definitive piece on cheating and fairness from the other thread will likely be re-worked into an 'honesty pledge'. (if you would care to do that Arnelos, it would be greatly appreciated. If not, I will re-draft it.)

I am assuming that we want our closed forum here. 1BC is offering to set-up a forum there if required, but that was originally intended for civfan who could not get a closed forum back on their home site. There will be a 'public' forum at 1BC for the game itself. I will let folks know when that is established.

What should be the procedure when 2 teams want the same civ? We are coming up with an approach where teams would put forward a first and second choice. If two want the same first choice, a toin coss, or paper-scissors-rock will determine who gets it.

Regarding civ choices, I will start a poll with the obvious civ choices on it, and everyone can wade into the discussion. We will see what comes of it, and may need a final run-off poll with a select few.

In what orders should the teams play? We will determine an optimal play order based on when folks will most likely be available to play. Die roll or the like will determine who goes first.

That still leaves a number of game parameters to determine. Spiffor had made an excellent list which he posted at 1BC. I will use a sub-set of that document to get discussions going. And I will post a few polls, which will take up even more space here - - sorry - but hey - we are one big family. I also recognize that that means anyone in the regular demo game can vote. I will ask them to not do so. Not much other choice for now.

Here's what is on the table:

- Do we want AIs or not ? (I am assuming 'no' unless there is a huge clamour to the contrary, in which case I will poll.)
- Do we play with mods ? (I am assuming 'no' -ditto)
- What will be the size of the map ? (see poll)
- What will be the difficulty ? (see poll)
- Do we want random landmass ? (will poll later)
- If no, what landmass do we want ?
- Do we want random climate ? (will poll later)
- If no, what climate do we want ?
- Do we want random temperature ? (will poll later)
- If no, what temperature do we want ?
- Do we want random barbarians ? (will poll later)
- If no, what barbarian difficulty do we want ?

Please feel free - and I know you will - to comment on any of this?

Before I come up with a complete answer (I have to go somewhere in a few mins), I just want to thank BetaHound for starting this thread.

Thanks Shiber. And I realize I forgot an important one - victory conditions. All discussions to date have been to use the 'classic' victory conditions (ie none of the new ones). Comments?

Probably standard. Small would handicap various civs and large would take too long. Just my personal opinion, though.

quote:

- What will be the difficulty ? (see poll)

Hmm.... I'm not bothered with the regent difficult we chose for the multi-team game, but Monarch might be better suited. Doesn't really matter, though, as all teams have the same difficulty level. To keep the game moving toward a conclusion, however, we might actually want to set a LOW difficulty setting. Just an idea...

quote:

- Do we want random landmass ? (will poll later)

Doesn't really matter. I'm fine with random or with picking any of the options.

quote:

- Do we want random climate ? (will poll later)

I'm torn. I like wet for rivers, but getting the jungle start from the Civ3DG wouldn't necessarily be so nice in a multi-site game I'm tempted to say lets pick normal/temperate because it has the least potential to be unbalancing.

quote:

- Do we want random temperature ? (will poll later)

For the same reason as climate, I'm temtped to with normal/temperate because it has the least potential to be unbalancing.

quote:

- Do we want random barbarians ? (will poll later)

I like raging hordes, personally, but random is fine with me.

As for victory conditions: ALL.

No. As was argued in the PTWDG, having fewer AIs than human players would likely be unbalancing.

I wouldn't object to a few small changes (eg taxmen req. currency and give two coins), but I also would be okay with standard rules.

Arnelos makes a good argument for medium settings all around. (Though we may want to go with 5 bil years old to smooth things out even further).

Random. We shouldn't know what's out there.

I love playing on raging hordes

As for setting barbarians to random, I'd expect that makes picking any civ with the expansionist trait a real crapshoot because it's always possible you end up rolling for "none"

Thanks Beta

In my personal games, I choose all random. However, as here a poor start will just make things un-fun, I agree with arnelos about setting everythign for middle of the line.

Barbarians should be random.

Land shape should be random. That will make expansionist very iffy as if you are on a small island....

Civs - I would rather talk about civ traits we would like and pick a civ from that. I would like a civ with any of these traits (in order of pref)

Commercial (money)
Industrial (fast roads)
Militeristic (GL's and lots of promotions)
religious (change of govt type easy)

I am against expansionistic. Scientific would be OK, but of minimal importance IMO. It would have to be offset by a good UU, such as persian immortials.

AI civs and barbarians are not much of a problem for more experienced players and they can be taken advantage of. If we want this game to be about the teams we should not have either and do the game in a pangea. That minimizes the chances that one team will get stuck by themselves on an island.

Difficulty level? Depends on whether or not we have AIs. Most of the differences in difficulty is advantages for the AI. For everything else it would apply the same to all teams. I remember reading some bug reports that the difficulty in some of the MP games resets to a certain value depending on game type when the game is reloaded. If Firaxis will confirm that is the case for the type we will be using we should pick the reset value to avoid any confusion.

Mods no. Map size standard. Medium on all the climate/age stuff.

I vote raging hordes for barbarians....it's so great...

I liked it in Civ2 where they would capture a city and just hold on to it, it used to piss me off to no end!

Could have been useful in this game....

I think the people against "mods" are against gameplay-altering mods. mods for changing civ colors and names may not be objected to by as many people. Same thing was true for the inter-team game.

As for the RP Team,
