Palace Relocation Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

Is it wise to relocate your palace when your territory gets to big?

I just moved mine with a Leader and it seems to be working... I might do it again... Is it worth it? Do you do it?

Japher:

My advice is to read the thread on corruption in the archive. It has all the info you need for palace/FP placement.

I usually only move it once. I usually build the FP near my original capitol, then jump my palace with a leader later in the game to where I want it. You will get significant benefit from the FP even if it is right next to your capitol.

Another good thread is an older one called "FP+Palace Placement."

I often move my palace, using the method Brizey described.

It's rare for me to need to relocate my Palace.

Example of a situation in which P should be moved:

Say you starting in Kansas City and now have an Empire across the lower 48 states with no intentions of invaiding either Canada or Mexico. In that case, the FP should either be built in New York City or Los Angeles with the P being relocated to the other city.

Example of when it shouldn't be moved starting from the same position:

If your planning on conquering all of North America you would want to hold off on building the FP until capturing Mexico City and leave the Palace in place. (The benifit of relocating the Palace to Toronto probably isn't worth the cost unless there's an Iron Works city near there.)

Yeah, I too am sorry.

Actually I want to thank Canada for their lower drinking age. We used to go across the border all the time for a wild weekend. Thanks Canada

If my capital is about in the middle, and my land is of longish shape (that happens often), I usually don't waste a leader on FP or P relocation. I build at the same time (preferably starting in my GA, if it's in time) both palace and FP for good in 2 cities close to my capital, but in different halves. The FP is usually ready quicker and already provides a little boost, as it's not yet located optimal. That helps to complete the new palace. I had amazing good results with the Ottomans at Emperor with a GLibrary/HGardens triggered GA. Nobody could match me after this, and I built all except one (Sun Tzu's) medieval wonders.

I kinda dislike the idea of moving my proud, ancient capitol... I haven't done it in Civ3 I think... but maybe that change totally when I get my longwanted internet connection and can start looking at MP?

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

I recently moved up to Monarch (stayed on Regent a LLLLOOOOONNNNNGGGGG time while I was testing/perfecting my mod) and found Palace relocation to be critical to a successful game. With the AI out-producing me, I needed to get as much as possible out of all my cities. The original capital was on the coast on a spur of land - really poor placement. So I will definitely move it if need be.

Increase Your PM Length

Canada boasts some great comedians such as Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, and Dan Akroyd. Sorry, it almost sounds like I'm standing up for them.

Back to (somewhat) the topic, this reminds me of one idea I always had to upgrade the Civ series was to have natural wonders a la Niagra Falls, Grand Canyon, or even the Alps, Amazon etc. It would boost the cultural and/or trade value of the city that has them within its radius, and increase the strength of the map-related random seed.

Just one of many thoughts I have during commute.

Natural Wonders would be great.

Canada did produce Shania Twain... I thank you.

Thanks for the comments

Yeah, I tend to move my palace when I need to, I am rather carless about, and I tend to try and conquer the world so I need to some of the times.

I like to move my palace, build wonders there, and then move it again, repeat. It seems to give me a larger and quicker production value out of my new and/or isolated towns. I also like to move it right onto my boarders were I can ussually take some towns through culture.

I believe the cumulative culture points from the relocated palace are reset to the new city.

But the palace is a minority culture provider (considering that it is the first improvement that you have). Play a game without relocating it, then compare the cpt of the palace to, say, your temple or library or a GW and it will be considerably smaller.

I believe. I'll look to verify and revisit if need be.

I usually relocate my palace 3 or 4 times on my own continent and once or twice to a second continent. I move the palace in a gradual manner, allowing the # of useful cities to grow as the palace is moved. You do not have to have a leader to do this (although it is the most effective) just look at a good shield city near the frontier and build it there, it wont take that long (any thing over 30 turns is too long) and it will increase the # of productive cities.

I should note that moving your palace is dependent on map size and OCN #. The larger the size and OCN the more effective the palace jump will be.

Incorrect, the former capital retains all culture from the old palace, it just will not gain any future culture from the palace

Correct, the palace is a small culture provider (1CP). I have modded Harbors, Airports, and Commercial Docks to have 1 CP as well. With the palace move you will lose 1 cp per turn, not a big loss in my opioion (assuming the palace had a 1000 yr bonus)
