yes, I don't know how people put up decent looking pictures (this one looks like worse quality than most I see put up)

dpi = dots per inch. Web standard is around 75, great quality is 300, you get anywhere above that and you're looking at a huge file with relatively little change in quality. If it was a scanned shot, it's likely the scanner was set to scan at an insane resolution level, like 1200 DPI (which for some reason is the default on some scanners )

If it was a digicam, it's generally 300-600 DPI...but even 600 DPI wouldn't have made a picture like that over 1 meg, I don't think...maybe...

The main culprit is whatever program he used to compress it to JPEG.

In Photoshop, without modifying the picture's size or anything, set to "Maximum" quality in JPEG it's only 609KB...half of the size of the 1.2MB JPG he sent me.
