Early in the 2002 season, Kiffin had signed a two-year extension through 2004, a deal worth about $1 million annually. The contract agreed to on Thursday supercedes that one. The agreement culminated 24 hours of hectic negotiations between Sexton and Bucs vice president Joel Glazer. The two spoke well into the night Wednesday and then resumed discussions Thursday. On Wednesday night, Kiffin spoke by phone with 49ers general manager Terry Donahue, who hopes to have a successor to Steve Mariucci in place by no later than next week. It is not known how the withdrawal of Kiffin as a candidate will affect the 49ers' search for a head coach. Bucs coach Jon Gruden, within minutes of his team's Super Bowl XXXVII victory Sunday night, announced the franchise would do everything it could to retain Kiffin. That was before San Francisco officials had even contacted the Bucs for permission to speak to their coordinator. Kiffin, 62, for years has been one of the premier defensive minds in the NFL, but finally received his public due only in the last two years. Obviously, the Super Bowl victory, in which Tampa Bay thoroughly throttled an Oakland offense that was statistically ranked No. 1 in the league, further elevated his profile and his reputation. The Bucs have ranked among the NFL's top six defenses in each of the past six seasons and were rated No. 1 in 2002.

If you think the Buccaneers defense is scary now... just wait until September. The Gulf Coast Terrors are just getting started.

In this age of salary cap and parity, you build a potential dynasty in the front office. Teams that have experts in judging talent are the one that compete well every year. They have that 2nd year or jouneyman player that steps right in when injury strikes. They have 3-6th rounds that contribute a few years down the road. Their first round picks go to Pro Bowls and don't leave for the bigger bucks.

Can Tampa Bay be a dynasty? The man who drafted this years champion is now doing the same for the Chicago Bears. Will his replacement be up to snuff, last year the Bucs didn't have a 1st or 2nd round pick so its hard to tell from that draft.

Swissy, you obviously don't pay much attention to the Bears. Angelo is an idiot. He is not the man responsible for TB or its success. Funny how when he leaves, they win. Leave the pseudo-NFL-analysis to those that actually pay attention to sports beyond the flash on the TV. Speaking of TB, I think it's important to point out that Gruden won them that Super Bowl. He out-coached everybody else. TB (especially on the defensive side) has had their key components in place. It was getting rid of Tony Dungy that did the job. You could compare it to the Bulls getting rid of Doug Collins and putting in Phil Jackson. Like Jackson, Gruden was the guy that got them over the hump and won them the Super Bowl.

Angelo and all his "geniousness" will blunder the fourth pick. He's already blundered in every GM decision so far with the Bears. He let Walt Harris and Tony Parrish go; and he gave super-bust RW McQuarters a big contract... the Bears D sucked this year because their secondary blew ass. They had a league low 9 interceptions. Angelo gave Bryan Robinson a big contract and he turned out to be a major bust. Angelo even admitted he f*cked up. Angelo also brings in the eternally half-dazed Cris Chandler. He publically said that 3rd string QB's are unimportant and didn't bother to get anyone but Henry Burris... (Mark Bulger and Feely of Philly were 3rd stringers).

So Swissy, I'll cease to embarass you any further and allow you and your silly post to fade away into the archives of Apolyton. Hopefully, this shameful moment will soon be forgotten by the few that will gaze upon your buffoonery.

well TB has been contenders for several years now. Remember it wasn't that long ago they almost beat the Rams in the playoff with Shawn King. I really thought they had what it took to beat them. I was rooting for TB, but I think it was Ricky Proehl who burned them for a TD for the St. Louis win.

This will ensure a consistant TB team. They may not win another superbowl, but I expect them to make the playoffs for the next three years. A bad Brad Johnson injury could change that, I only hope in the off season they get a better backup than Rob Johnson- Mr. Sackman.

I've seen bad handmelon (London Monarchs), and believe me it is considerably worse than 3rd division footie...AF needs a fairly high level of quality players and coaches to stop it from being a thoroughly annoying mess.

Nope. The salary cap will ALWAYS get you in the end. As you win more and more games players think they are worth more and more, and you simply can't keep all of your stars.

He didn't draft him. Jauron just got there when Cade was drafted.

Angelo didn't do anything because he was saddled with a team that went 13-3. Would you want to rock that boat?

Anyways, when he was with Tampa they drafted all of those talented defensive players - Sapp, Brooks, etc. so it's not like he totally sucks.

Alex Brown and that corner he drafted look pretty good, and Columbo was doing better than "False-start" Robertson. Gray looked like a potential starter efore being injured. I really hope he gets the job, Green just isn't very effective as a safety, he needs to go back to nickelback.

Didn't R.W. have the most interceptions for the Bears this year? IMO he's way better than Walt (who, btw isn't exactly an all-star on the Colts) and he has the ability to be a shut down corner and a guy who can make big plays.

Mark Hatley drafted Cade McNown... and McNown was on his way out way before Jerry Angelo and his "Geniousness" got there. BTW Angelo let Blake Brockemeyer (sp?) go. And look how effective the Bears offensive line was.

You keep thinking small, Sava. Brock was past his prime, we needed to get rid of him, and Angelo did - saving us cap room. We never had a consistent production from our line because the starting lineup was inconsistent.
Brock gets cut - Robertson and Columbo vie for the job - Robertson gets job, sucks it up - Columbo goes in and does decent - various lineman get injured - Gandy is now left tackle - and on and on.

I won't say Angelo is a genius, but he was stuck with a lame duck coach that pulled a good season out of his ass.

Here's to Nick Saban in 2004.

Brock did fine with the Bears during the 13-3 season... sure past his prime, but better than the alternative. I agree we're stuck with Jauron, but I wouldn't be too confident in any replacement that Angelo picks. He's proven himself to be a dumbass.

I heard today that Greg Blache (Bears Def Coordinator) is a candidate for the 49er's job. Good... PLEASE SAN FRANCISCO TAKE HIM. Blache said on an interview with Dan Jiggetts on the Score Sports Radio that because people play Madden 2003, they think they are smart at football. He also said that Mike Singletary wasn't qualified enough for the linebackers' coach position. Even though Buddy Ryan in a later interview said Singletary was qualified for almost any position in the NFL. And the Ravens and Billick thought Singletary was good enough to coach Ray Lewis... so go figure.

The Bears' problems start with ownership. The McCasky's need to all die (and I know there are a lot of them) or sell the team because they are a cancer. The Bears need new owners, new GM, new coaches, the list goes on. At best, the Bears go 7-9 next season as Brian Urlacher shines at MLB once again.

I'm still pissed at R.W. Mcquarters for what he did in that game near the end of the season. It seems to me he wanted that touchdown for himself. He wanted the lateral. He should have thrown a block and maybe the bears could have won.
