Is it okay to vote purely on party loyalty? Suffering from ads?

The other day I was talking to this bloke and the discussion got round to politics, in particular voting in this country. He said that he'd vote for Ian Duncan Smith because he's a Conservative, even if he didn't necessarily agree with his policies. His thinking was that it was better to have a Tory PM, any Tory PM, rather than leave the Labour Party in charge. How ****ed up is that?

Yes it is ok. If you believe in the collective ideas of the party, it is better to have the party in power than the one you disagree with.

After all, you can't agree with everything a person runs for.

At the end of the day most voters are going to be voting for a candidate whose party is closest to your own political beliefs. If you've got a party with whom you never disagree then you're doing very well.

Of course, voting - say - Liberal Democrat out of party loyalty when you actually agree more with the Conservatives is rather silly.

It's OK, it's what I do all the time

More seriously, the benefits of always voting for your party are many : it becomes a part of your identity, it relieves you to get too much information, and it gives a permanent topic of discussion with others (whether they are from the same party or not).

So, it's not that bad, as long as your favorite party doesn't change enough to go radically against your beliefs.

So what's the point of voting in the first place? You're hardly using your voice in this democratic country...

How is that ****ed up? He dislikes the current government's policies(and presumably would hate a Liberal Democratic government), so he feels he would rather see someone from the opposition instead.

I fail to see anything wrong with it in countries that use Parliamentary systems.

He dislikes Labour, not because of their policies, but because they are the Tories 'old enemies'.
