Another factor of increasing divorces is the higher life expectancy. 50 or 60 year old people take an important part in divorces, or other separations such as suicide.
During the renaissance, and during the indutrial era for the poor, a marriage would last about 12 years before somebody dies. Today, the life expectancy makes it possibles for marriages to last 70 years or more. It is a very different kind of commitment.

Also, we really shouldn't forget the importance of role models (it has been surprisingly little adressed in this thread). Children from separated families have much, much more chances to divorce in the future. Heck, I even know an unmarried girl who is planning her divorce already

I think that would be an interesting study, because it seems to me that even when all the 'magic' is gone, people stick together because of their mutual love for their kids. The intimacy and companionship of their spouse doesn't matter nearly as much as the love for you kid.

In spite of the difficulties that the heterosexist, homophobic society does to prevent gays from establishing stable, monogamous relationships, there are many gays who have become very happy in such relationships -- even if they are not legally recognized.

Gays are perfectly capable of being very happy, in stable, monogamous relationships in spite of societal obstacles that encourage rampant promiscuity.

If you quote me, credit me Spiffor. The question is can people today sustain such a marriage for 50 years? I think they can, but more needs to be done to help people see marriage as a life-long commitment. Pre-marital counselling is a big benefit.
