We never used PCX, we originally used the XPM format. The reason for PNG is that it is an open format, a W3C standard and has good support for high res and alpha blending, in addition to very good compression.
Of course, JPEG has even higher compression, but it is lossy (parts of the graphics will be lost in compression). It is used mostly for compression of photographs.
