networking question... Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Okay, this is what i have:

cable internet
2 computers
3 network cards
hub, and all the wires

This is what i did:

I have two cards in this computer, the line from the cable modem coming into one, a line to the hub in the other.

then I have a line from the hub to the other computer.

This is my problem: The line to the hub is plugged into the uplink slot.

My computer tells me this "network cable is unplugged" and the light isn't on on the hub.

Any ideas?

Got spare money?

Aren't you supposed to put the cable modem hookup into the uplink port on the hub?

Tired of ads?

The cable from your computer's NIC to the hub goes in one of the "normal" ports, not the uplink port.

If you want to connect to the uplink port, you will need a cross-over cable, although chances are you don't want to connect to the uplink port.

The "Cable Modem" can not connect directly to the hub.

You will have to connect the "cable modem" to one of the NIC's in the first computer.

Two Options:

The first computer will need two NIC's (Network Interface Card), the second NIC would then either connect to the HUB or the second computer. If you connect to the HUB, you use standard RJ45 Ethernet cable. If you connect first computer directly to second computer, you must use a "Crossover Cable".

1. If you decide to use the Hub: Connect the RJ45 cable from the second NIC to the "Uplink" of the HUB. Then connect the Second computer to one of the HUB's ports. In this scenario, you use normal RJ45 cables.

2. If you decide to not use the HUB. Run a "Crossover Cable" from the second NIC in the First computer, to the NIC in the Second computer.

Since you’re not using a Router you will run into problems with IP addressing. The first computer will either need to use DHCP or ICS.
It’s really much easier with a router. You connect cable modem to router. You then connect all computers to the router. The router handles IP addressing and gives you Fire Wall protection. Home routers have really come down in price. With rebates, you can get a router for about 120$.

This is only specific for people who have craptastic ISPs like Kaak.

I plug my cable modem directly into the hub and it works great across four devices using the net.

I do too, but I can only get one computer on the net. Maybe my package only allows for one IP address.

Do you use dhcp on all your devices?

Unless you've got a hub that supports internet connection sharing, you've gotta get your ISP to give you more IPs.

We've got 3 IPs from Shaw, so any 3 devices can be online at any given time. I think an additional IP a month is $10 with Shaw.

If the fourth device tries to get on the net when it boots up, the hub kicks off the device on the hub least active on the internet and assigns that IP to the new device.

I could have sworn my package allowed more IP addresses, because I have the total entertainment(?) package. The one with internet and digital cable.

It's not a big deal because I seldom have an extra computer around that would need net access.
