Does the AI Trade for Worthless Resources? Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

I want to add some strategic resources that will only be used to allow certain buildings, and only if the resource in question is within the city grid -- hence, being completly worthless for trade. Is the AI likely to trade for these resources, and, if so, how likely?

Yes. I discovered that 1/3 of the AI trade value of Iron in the ancient age came from the Iron Works. This is because the Iron Works has no tech prerequisite even though you cannot have coal until Steam Power and even then couldn't build it with imported Iron.

Put an end to popups!

Hmmm...well, I might go through with it anyway, since I really don't see another way around the problem.

Thanks!

It's kind of stupid to have to have both iron and coal in the city radius in order to build the Iron Works. If you build a city near iron, what are the chances of a coul resource popping up near enough to the city for you to build Iron Works. And if you build a city near coal, what are the chances that Iron will pop up?
But maybe that's just me.

What I find stupid is that you can't have the in-city-radius requirement flagged for normal buildings. I'd like cities fortunate enough to have wine nearby (as opposed to imported wine) to be able to build wineries, but noooooo, can't have that, now can we?

My last two games both have had cities that I've been able to built the Iron Works in.

192 shields per turn, baby!

Well, it was just my opinion.
And I guess that the Iron works really should be something you have to work for, finding a place to build it. I'm just saying that it's unlikely that you'll find a suitable location.
But maybe that's just me.

There is on average, three spots per game that are viable to build the Iron works. the problem is having it in a spot in your territory (the more civs left the lesser the possibility) I can usually take over enough space before Steam Power to insure that one will fall into my sphere of influence.

Most of my games have spots viable to build the iron works. Problem is that many of these spots are to far away from my core to be productive, or the cities are simply built the wrong place(iron in one city and coal in the next.)

That always happens for me unless I'm on a custom map or something.

yes like bongo said, often times I will eventually find a spot for a city which meets the criteria for iron works. Yet when I build it I have corruption so crippling it makes it difficult for the city to prosper. It serves little more then a military installation because of this.

hi ,

it helps to put a palace in it

want a real high production city , try to get Hoover in it and you are bound to have at least one hundred shields in that city

have a nice day

What bugs me is that if the coal or iron disappears you cannot build the Iron Works anymore. I was waiting to build it and then coal suddenly disappeared! I couldn't build the Iron Works after that.

As long as you start building the IW before the resource disappears you will still be able to build it, however if you switch to any other project after it disappears even for a moment you lose the ability to build it.

If you want the IW, Don't wait! Build it while you can.

Full PM-box? Change here!

That's another point on my to-do list for my next game. Place cities so they share iron deposits, that way you will increase the odds of being able to build IW

hi ,

sometimes its intresting to wait after an iron deposit or coal goes away , there is a good possibility that the deposit comes back to the same place , .....

or you can reload the autosave , ......

have a nice day
