Coming from the man who called me a Wintel fanboy in a post with no other content, so it was obvious the intent was to troll and/or start a flamewar.

--"AcesHardware doesn't have nice purty images to link to for benchmark results."

So link to the actual reviews. Ziff-Davis isn't exactly a paragon of accuracy here, and simple bar graphs are completely meaningless by themselves. If you don't at least know what the set-ups for each one are the results aren't any better than a plot of random numbers.

--"s I said, I'm not particularly tech savvy, so I can't put these components together myself."

Well, it depends. If you know some friendly geeks, bribe one with a case of Jolt or something and have him put one together for you.
Other than that, the thing you're really buying from these companies is support. I'm not familiar enough with any of their desktop products to comment on quality, and I build my own so I'm even less familiar with their support staff...

He did say he was upgrading for gaming. That pretty much rules out Macs.

Guynemer, when I was going to school in nearby Ypsilanti, there was a place called Sunset Computers on Hewitt near Michigan Ave. They also run an ISP known as Provide.net

It's basically a mom-and-pop operation, but the staff is helpful in putting together the kind of system you want. And prices are very good. Since you live in Ann Arbor, I would recommend you check them out.

"He did say he was upgrading for gaming. That pretty much rules out Macs."
I know, and I freely admit that macs are not as good at PCs for gaming (yet). However, I don't understand why people claim doing other things are better on pc than mac (digital photography, music creation, video-editing, word-processing, digital manipulation) when I can do all of these things with great ease on my mac.
Plus I can play Jedi Knight 2 on it and some other great games on it too.
Just because the mac isn't great for gaming doesn't mean it's completely devoid!
That was pretty impressive, Asher. Impressive for an eight year old with photoshop.

Speed! There's a reason Steve Jobs chose Intel processors for Pixar over G4 clusters.

Hey Ash - let's see if I can get into this game too!
This took me about twenty seconds... how long did it take you to make yours?
And when I'm talking about video editing, I'm not talking about fücking toy story... I'm talking about actual every day programs that ordinary people can use, and when I eventually make the film for my college's film contest, it'll be with imovie, and with much ease!
I've used imovie lots already, and it holds up really well.

Less than that.
Opened your image, polarized it, drew a circle in about 10 seconds. Including program load and exit time.

That is a phenomenal argument. Of course you can do the basic stuff on all systems. The reason why Macs are silly is you're paying a lot more to do less, but because you find it purty. Gag me with a spork.

Not only do I find it pretty (and it is) but I find it more convenient and elegant to work on. It is an elegant work interface.
How exactly do I do less than you?
As far as twenty seconds goes, I had to open up your image, open a new larger box to be able to surround your circle with my circle, and also I typed in a little joke. So I had a bit more work. Plus I think mine looks more professional.

What good CAD programs are there on the Mac?
How many of the good PC games are on the Mac?
How many good 3D rendering programs are there on the Mac?

You may not do less if you choose to restrict yourself to the applications Apple gives you, but you certainly restrict yourself from what you can do given proper software.

Well, I have never had to deal with cad or 3d rendering programs so I don't know, but I do know that there are TONS of obscure programs to fit your everyneed. I've seen everything from these crazy sound applications to a word processor designed for writing screenplays.
Did I want to reverse your polarization? No, I just simply inverted it, but anything I could have done would have merely emphasized the hack-job you did.
And as far as games go, we have civ 3, jedi knight 2, and we're going to get plenty more... Just because we don't get Serious Sam doesn't really bother me - I have better ways to spend my time.

brilliant ixnay, just brilliant
Never have I seen more subtle and tactful use of the lensflare...
Also I just want to mention that I've played serious sam, and it was enjoyable - for a time. I just grew tired of the consistency of it... I never felt like it got more interesting, as happens in my favorite games - Deus Ex and Civ 2 being good examples.
